Need advice to use my 8.25 or a 8.8 rearend
I currently have a 8.25 w/410 gears in my 98 XJ. I dont play hard. the 8.25 is an open rearend. i have the option to buy a 8.8 out of a Explorer for $150 but has 189,000 miles on it w/410 gears which is what i need. what im wanting to know is should i just keep my 8.25 and maybe put a lock-rite locker in it or buy the 8.8 and do all the mods required to install it in my XJ? what $$ can i expect to complete the conversion if i go that route? like i said i dont play that hard and not very often either. its a daily driver. thanks for advice

be prepared for your on road manners to change a bit if you do a rear locker. you should get used to it fine though. if youre only doing one locker and it is a daily driver i would just do the front. there are a lot of opinions on which axle people would lock. i say front, someone else would say rear. i say front because when youre on the street and in 2wd it will have no effect on driving. also the front would help pull you through a mud hole rather then try to push you through it.

With a front locker you will never really know its there on the street in 2wd ,but it will come alive off road.I am locked at both ends and did the rear first if I had it to do over I would have locked the front first.A rear only will push you around a little in 2wd in rain or snow but if you drive it like a Jeep you will be fine.

Yeah but why spend money on a Lsd when you can get a full locker for the same or less?Only exeption would be if you could find a 8.25 with lsd at the JY for cheap. There out there I had one and sold it for 100.00.Lock Right locker I just bought was 260.00 shipped

oem lsd will just wear our or if you get a jy one will pry need rebuilt anyway or spend $500 for a detroit truetrac plus cost of installation. you could pick up a dana 30 aussie for $250 and do it yourself.

My experience with the 8.8 is Mustangs and Broncos, with those miles it will need freshened if it hasn't been done recently. Meaning it will need at least new clutches and steels in the LSD. Not a big expense unless you have to pay to have it done. Fresh LSDs are fine, tired ones act a lot like an open diff offroad.
