Name that Diff ? please
Evening all.
Sorry I havnt really posted here before but iv been looking around for the past few months since picking up a already modded XJ in the UK.
The Question I have is... Is this Dana 44 (pic below), it has some sort of auto locker. please note where the number should be a piece of steel have been welded over to "amour". I have a 35 front with a lunch box locker
A few shots of me enjoying my Jeep

i assume SAE 75-140 synthetic would be best for a fluid change? I do 90% off road.

yes, it is a d44. what year is the jeep? most 1987 model xj's had the d44 rear as stock.
it very well could have an auto locker in it. does it click when you turn corners?
i always use regular 80w90 gear oil just because i change it often.
and yeah, if the front is stock, it will be a d30.

It is 1995 , imported from japan in 2001. The transferbox is 84 with a 261 ratio but the gear box is 95-2001. 4 speed with only part time 4x4 Hi, LO.
The rear diff is locked the hole time I think. When tight Cornering on tarmac in 2wd you will notice one wheel try to lock. oddly the last owner Fitted VW passatt rear discs and pads rather than the starts drums. As a result i suffer form alot less issue of "crap" getting stuck in the drums etc.
Ill pop my head under in the morning and check the front Diff, it may well be a 30.
