My Turbo Thoughts
Your probably thinking "Not this again!!!"
A turbo isn't noticeable till it spools, so one the trails it doesn't matter,
Now here's the problems with a turbo
1 Mounting, Via the manifold or moving it.
2 Piping its a pain in the ***. Using a Boostwerks manifold makes it simple but is bank! Modding a renix manifold is easier.
3 Fuel management, You have it easy you can run a FMU or a fuel pressure regulator but you need to make sure your fuel pump is up to it or upgrade (This applies to the Super aswell) But if you with a mega squirt it is also doable.
4 Supers are easy to setup and build boost early but can be expensive. Just like Tuning a turbo.
Cost wise a turbo is going to be around a Super or a built stroker.
Now here are some helpful links

Good build on cherokee forum!
I am using a Cummins HX35, Modifying a Renix fuel rail and will be using some 36 lb injectors with a regulator.
I posted this trying to help others who are considering it.
For me it will be a long term project, but I have all of the parts I need and am working on building the proper setup but as you can see from Wookieintheforest its alot of work to mount an HX35.
Some other things to consider
You need to tune it effectively
An AFR Gauge
Some tuning method.
A Waist gate and Blow off valve
Their are 2 kinds of waist gates and they are internal and external
Internals built into the turbo External is mounted off of the turbo this style wont get boost creep like a cheap internal will.

Like I said in many other turbo threads, including the one where you posted that in originally....
An off the shelf turbo will most likely have the issues with spooling you mention.
But there aren't any snails made specifically for the Jeep 4.0.
Which is why a hybrid turbo would be a much better choice.
Its all in how you put it together.
There was a member here from Northern IL/Southern WI that did his own hoke brew turbo.
And he didnt seem to have as hard of a time as your suggesting....

Small turbos with dual ball bearing and billet wheels will do great off road. I have seen guys drop a good amount of cash to only gain 40-80hp. Ive seen 2JZ Toyota engine in XJ's crank out awesome power for only 3k. Its idea to look into, it isn't for everyone.

Morris 4x4 are you refering to this?
"A turbo isn't noticeable till it spools, so one the trails it doesn't matter, "
I put that in their because all of the people complaining it wont spool and will lag. A small turbo will be perfect offroad Pete on SISoffroad runs one that is amazing.
In my project I have a Mitsubishi 16g that is just to small I think. So I went to the HX35 as its a common journal bearing turbo and I work around them all the time with diesels. It also will be perfect for DD It builds boost at around 1900 to 2100 and will be a nice turbo if I ever stroke.

I know the kid that made that turbo setup in the link you posted and if i remember correctly he ended up running into a bunch of problems with fuel management stuff. i got to see it person and it was a sweet setup but it was running i think only 5 to 8 psi.
