Default Is My Stock Exhaust Holding Me Back? (Small Engine Mods)

Hey all,

I have a decision to make regarding my exhaust. I have recently installed the true cold-air Spectre Cowl Intake kit, as well as 784 injectors, in my 2001 XJ. I have read about a lot of people doing 2.5" exhaust kits with decent results. I have also read what leads me to believe that my 2001, with the pre-cats and regular cat, has 2.5" piping all the way to the cat, then my muffler and tailpipe are 2.25". With the air intake, etc...am I being held back by my stock exhaust? I am trying to justify spending the money on a Magnaflow 2.5" kit versus other things (I'm looking at $180 for everything installed).

I am just trying to get the most out of my mods so far, however limited they may be.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

2001 heads are restricted on the exhaust ports. You might not see that much if any gain.

I went from the stocker muffler to a 44 series non delta flow flowmaster, I ran a tail pipe all the way back, i noticed more torque, little as it may be, bit it sounds very nice, deep, and no drone in the interior...mines an 01 as well...

Well my main debate isn't Flowmaster vs. Magnaflow, it's whether or not the purchase will benefit the Jeep for more than just the sound

Seriously though, more opinions would be great!

I got a 98 with stock intake. but I have 703 injectors, bored throttle body, and a flowmaster super 44 2 1/2" muffler and tail pipe. It feels like more low end power and throttle is snappier. Hopefully I will upgrade my intake soon.

If you upgrade from a stock muffler to say a Flowmaster, do you have to (or should you) upgrade the air intake? If you do need to upgrade the air intake, what intake is the best for the money? I, as well, have an '01 XJ, and I have been contemplating upgrading my stock exhaust to a Flowmaster for some time, but they do not have any compatible with my XJ, according to Flowmaster's site.

For my 98 there wasn't a compatible muffler either. The super 44 is shorter then the stock muffler. I just added a piece of exhaust pipe in between the cat and the muffler. I believe it is 2.25" exhaust pipe after the cat. I got the super 44 center/offset 2.5" pipe. To make it work I just cut my extension piece out of 2.5" exhaust pipe. The extension was able to slip over the end of the cat and into the muffler. I just bent a new tail pipe out of 2.5" and clamped everything up.

That's kind of the mindset that I had. I wasn't sure if the added air from the intake was getting caught up by the 2.25" pipe and stock muffler...

Are flowmasters really that much better, and still don't drone? The guy at the shop recommended a magnaflow since it's a cabin vehicle, which made sense to me, but I want the deepest sound I can get.

I've always been a Magnaflow guy. Love their sound. They have a different pitch to them, almost kind of "hollow" sounding, and I love it.

Flowmaster sounds pretty decent as well. I've just never dabbled with that company much. Always Magnaflow.

Love my Magnaflow catback setup! Zero complaints and it's better than my previous true straight pipe with a glasspack lol.
