Default My final word on IAT relocation

well its 30* outside, and I have been running a scan tool and watching the IAT sensor in both locations.

There is a definite difference in temps from airbox to the intake, about 12* lower in the box while driving. Now here is my biggest discovery, watching the sensor in the intake after I got out of a store, I started the Jeep. I observed that the sensor had heat soaked up to 130* and took 5 miles to get down to the normal reading!

I did the same test for the intake box sensor and the reading from heat soak sitting was only 20* higher than normal driving temp! and returned to normal readings within 1/4 mile!

My final word is that the 12-20* difference in the intake temp reading is worth the heat soak issue in all climates. It is way more consistent and I like that. All my GM cars have the sensor in the tube and the Jeep is the only one that I personally have seen in the metal intake. And I believe the reading is more accurate even running because the sensor is still reading heat off the engine and not the actual air temp.

I installed mine into the air cleaner lid and noticed smoother running, but no real power increase.

Thanks. I've always wondered about that but was too lazy to do it.

it is worth it! I am saying that alot of people including myself got another sensor and switched it back to the original position during the winter months for fear of bad MPGs. I "busted" it more or less. Heat soak is bad!

Your test results confirmed what I always thought was true. Another thing to check on is the cleanliness of your IAT. I can't remember the actual values but there was a 10% difference in them after cleaning the grunge off the IAT.

I ran into a guy who suggested this, I thought it was a load of crock and would probably mess with the system too much. I'm converted! Next pnp run I'm grabbing one

Thank you for doing this! I've wondered about this myself for quite a while.. Jeep runs alot better with it in the intake tube.

I was asking this about 2 years ago when i first got her. I did this to my 87 vette and it seemed to run smoother.

But when i inquired about this mod for my 99, i was told it won't work. mainly because of the upgraded intake for the 99s

Is this still true?

Can you use a resistor to adjust for the 12 degree difference between the air box and the manifold? Or is that not too high of a concern?

I've never heard of that being the case. I dont see the differences in the intakes making a difference.

short read summary...install it into your airbox and leave it there! don't plug it back into the oven!

mine are clean IAT sensors, the one in the intake is now just a cork
