Muffler stretching question?
I want to eventually get a whole new exhaust system (headers, cat, tailpipe) but i bought a Flowmaster 44 (2.25 IN, OUT) after i bought the Jeep about 2 months ago. I work at Autozone where we can rent out tools. I saw a tool that stretched pipes (not longer but a larger diameter), and i wanted to know if i get 3" piping throughout (is this possible, or is the biggest 2.5?) could i just open up my mufflers inlet and outlet to 3", or would i have to buy a brand new one?

i've always just used those tools to open up the pipe after it's already been installed, therefor dimpling the tube due to the clamp.
but i can't see why you couldn't use it to open it up a bit. i don't think you will get 1/4 inch tho without splitting the tube.
besides, it you were to go 3 inch high flow, you better have more air/fuel coming in otherwise it's pointless. why open up one without opening up the other...

I dont want to have to use more fuel. I guess 2.5 would be fin then? I just want to have a better sounding exhaust. if i just keep the muffler i have on now wouldnt that be the bottle neck since its 2.25 and the rest of the tubing will be 2.5, or because the inlet and oulet arent that long and the muffler is clearly larger than 2.25 it wont make a difference?

what year is the jeep? I added a "raptor" (cheap flowmaster knock-off) muffler right after the catalyst and it sounds good. I have it dumping right after the muffler, not the rear. If you are 1992 or prior, you may not need a catalyst. SO take off the cat (get a couple HP) add the flow master and that will be plenty loud. Keep the 2.25" exahust and just use adaptors and that 24" 2.25" pipe you can get from your store. $40 and you have a better flowing/sounding exhaust. 3" would be obnoxious.

2.5 is plenty unless your maybe running a stroker.
As for that exhaust expander... Good luck! There is a reason why the muffler shops version is a big beast. Expanding that tubing takes some grunt... Not able to be done to any real extent using one of the little Harbor freight/Rental tool versions. You simply can't put enough @$$ into it to work and when you think your good... the tool will break. Trust me... I've tried it.
