Manifold bolts

So I'm going to put a new head on and borla long tube on my 89 xj. What exhaust and intake manifold hardware do you all suggest so I can start ordering parts? Also the borla header is used can I use a oem gasket?

ARP hardware (I would buy them for the head bolts also) and the best gasket you can buy. Buy the best the first time out, never worry about them again.

What do I use for exhaust and manifold bolts tho arp dosnt make stuff

Where did you look for them, I'm sure the 4.0 HP engine builders use them. If not check with Morris 4x4 for the answers on what they suggest.

Most header bolts are 1".

Your bolts are 3/8-16 and you'll need at least 1 1/4" to 1 3/8" long, you have a 1/2" flange.

Or..............it's not rocket science

i would try to get a hold of parts from the dealership. although typically more expensive than parts stores, it is worth it. arp makes good stuff, but I think their product use on a stock jeep is unnecessary. the factory parts last indefinitely without failure, just keep it simple.

I replaced all bolts/studs with ARP studs along with mil spec lock nuts. Don't have to worry about them backing off...ever.

That looks absolutely delicious. So you replaced everything with studs? What did you do about the funky washers?

I'm looking at a later date to have a larger collector welded on my APN header for a custom exhaust, and I think im gonna follow your lead on the manifold hardware.

the funky washers, are conical washers, as they heat up they allow for expansion and cover a larger surface area over the header/manifold flange which prevents loosing on the nuts as well as reducing the fatigue that lock washers cause which can break the studs/bolts off in the head over time.

For those who need ARP fasteners looks like here is the place to start.

I use all ARP studs from top (valve covers) to bottom (splayed 4 bolt mains) on my race and HP street/strip motors have for many years. Cheap insurance and they make life easier when working with them.
