louder jeep!!!
i currently have a flowmaster exhaust on my 98 xj and want it louder. i know i can get headers and that will help (my friends yota has same exhaust and headers and is only a 4 cyllinder and is twice as loud as mine) but i was wondering if there is a cheaper alternative. thanks!

Another option is the pipe running to your cat should be 2.5" and out is 2.25" put on a 2.5" highflow cat, and run 2.5" from the cat back, in and out of a 2.5" muffler. This will keep you legal and should be louder.

Get a glasspack, and turn the pipe down before the rear axle. . Before you install the glasspack soak it with gas and let it burn the internals out. I bought mine with the glasspack and thought it wasn't loud enough so I made a turndown and it sounds mean now. 1800rpm on the highway kills your ears though lol

You can run a high flow cat which will louden it up some more too.
Also, you could probably redo the exhaust tubing and run brand new tubing from the headers STRAIGHT back to the cat and then the flowmaster. That's really all you can do for cheap with an XJ.

watch out, last time modifying catalytic converters was brought up the mods came in and got all angry. but, just for the record, I did my exhaust the other day, and ran the dump just in front of the rear passenger tire, little louder than stock and gave it a bit more power

If I wanted primarily loud I would go with this: 2.5" Metallic Converter and this: MagnaFlow 4" Round Muffler.
The converter is iffy on a 98 but you "should" be fine as I don't think that year jeep needs a very heavily loaded converter. The muffler will be loud, it'll offer a little bit deeper of a tone than a glasspack plus it won't blow out like a glasspack will. I run this setup on mine plus another 5x8 muffler and it's just right to me, if I were to remove the 5x8 and just run the 4" round muffler it would be very loud.
