Detroit it's simple and strong , But Arb is nice since it can basicly be a spool when engaged and an open differential when unlocked ...I have detroit in the rear ,and the street manners are just fine with it ,So I would say it's fine for a DD .

AGREED!

I've been running a Detroit in the rear and a Powertrax in the front for almost 8 years on a daily driver XJ that I wheel often and hard. Slight quirkiness on the road, but I like that! The only problem I ever had was when I bent the rear housing and the Detroit would pop and push the XJ around at speeds above 45 mph. With the housing replaced it's back to normal.

My Bro runs Ausies in both axles on a TJ. Again slight quirkiness on the road, but he likes that too!

Both XJ and TJ run D30(HP on XJ) and D35 axles. 33's on XJ, 31's on TJ. Both daily drivers.

Look online for parts pricing.
I installed everything below so there were no labor costs.

Are these the other details your looking for? =]

If you have a D35 dont bother locking it. Spending money on a D35 is about as stupid as burning your money before you even spend it.

If its a C8.25 then I'd go with the Detroit or the ARB if you wheel hard.

When you say quirkiness, what are you refering to? I understand that the back can chirp about but what about the front?

I go to the snow every now and then to snowboard here in CA, i dont want to throw my jeep into a snowbank or off the road because the front starts freaking out in the snow. Have you guys brought yours into the snow?

Thanks

Will

Dont lock it in the snow. I'm in Canada and trust me I know snow. Lock the rear and go easy on snow around corners with the rear. Forget about driving it locked in the front in the snow. Get an Elocker or ARB so you can turn it on and off.

Light snow? wet snow? Ice?

Locked makes you lose traction and you'll go straight forward when you try to turn.

It can be done but I would NEVER suggest it to anyone.

How will an automatic locker such as Detroit or Aussie work in the front when in 2wd. Will it be tough to drive on the street, manageable but noticeable, or invisible??

Auto lockers in the front in 2wd are non-existant as far as the driver is concerned. Put it in 4wd in the snow and its a whole other ball game.

If you have a 231 I wouldnt hesitate to put a auto locker up front.

I've driven around with my hubs locked in while in 2wd running 55-65 mph ,and it drove fine ...I don't know about the longevity of parts rolling around like that ,and that's what you would be doing with stock Jeep unitized hubs .

Why would having a 231 make a difference? As far as i know, the 242 is the same just with full time 4.
