Default locker vs limited slip

ive heard horror stories about winter driving with a front locker and lots of people say only for rock crawling.my jeep is a DD and a trail/mud rig whenever i get the chance to go out and play.i would really like to have both front tires moving to help through the mud/snow without effecting the street performance such as losing control, not having as much control in any weather. would the detroit trutrac LSD be in my best interest??is there something else out there??should i just leave the front axle alone? help a fellow jeeper out!

A Detroit TruTrac would work perfect for the type of duty you described you use your Jeep for. If you ever plan on adding in Rock or Trail crawling to your list, you may want to consider a selectable locker. By flipping a switch you can go from open to locked and back to open again.

The Tru trac is sort of like an open diff in that it puts all the power to one wheel or the other. The difference is that it feeds the power to the wheel with the most traction, an open diff feeds all the power to the wheel with least traction. So, you are getting an improvement in frontend traction but, you are not fighting the wheels being locked together like a normal locker would cause. that is why you have to fight a rig with a front locker on low traction surfaces. I have a front Aussie "lunchbox" style locker in my Jeep and I've never had to fight it yet...and it's very quiet.

You won't want a regular eaton limited slip (clutch plates) for a Jeep. If you are considering LSDs for both ends just go with Tru Tracs front and rear. I've heard of other guys who have done that when they use their XJs for on road and light off road duty and they love how it works.

I'd go rear first.

personal preference? or would doing the rear actually be better first..ive read some of the threads where doing anything to the front (locker/LSD) to improve traction is a night and day difference.

When it comes to the rear end, there's probably not even a noticable difference when comparing lsd to locker. All I know is when you go from open rear to limited slip/locker rear in the winter it's amazing (taking off).
