http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DT...6A?seid=srese2

That's for a D35... I don't know what your plans for your rig are but the D35 isn't known for it's strength. Detroit is a far better locker but I'd upgrade to a better axle that's a direct swap like a D44 or C8.25 29 spline

Comes down to cost while upgrading the axle is a smart choice but you figure 100-200 for the axle them matching the gears sets front and rear 400~ plus a new locker 3-600.. it adds up quick then there is the other stuff bearings, brakes, etc..

I run Detroit Lockers in my 99 in the D30 and Chy 8.25 29 spline both along with 4.56 gears on 33" tires. The Detroit's are the top of the line in auto-lockers and the strongest..........

But I would "NEVER" invest a single dime in a D Turdy Five PERIOD!!! Why put $600 in a piece of junk good for a boat anchor only too weak. I missed the year you have but hope you have HPD30 and not the LP. Buy a Chy 8.25 97-01 they are all 29 spline and buy a Detroit for it.

Need more info from you as far as gears/tires.

Hard to beat a Detroit but pretty easy to beat a Spartan. The quality and warranty, if you can call it that just plain sucks. My jeep is not a DD so it only gets out once a month if I'm lucky so when I bought my spartan it sat for a few months, went on three trail rides and broke on the third ride. I was right at a year so I was told I was SOL. Worst lunchbox I've ever run. I hated my lockright but at least it worked. My Aussies on the other hand worked great for over 5 years. Only problem I've ever had with a detroit is if you break a shaft you tend to break a spring inside them but it's fairly easy to replace.

Thanks for the info. I have two weeks to get it fixed before the next run i have commited to. I had a line on a d44 but it appears that one has gone awol. I had a guy offer a 8.8 but he wants 200.00 for it. then there is the gear change..not sure what the gear ratio is in it but I have 3.55s in the XJ now. I know i could buy a set and upgrade both front and rear to 4.10s and get a better ratio for the larger tires. But doing it all right now and then still not having a locker....doing the pricing thats roughly 200.00 just to either match them up or 400 to convert...Thinking about just fixing the 35 and running it with another Spartan, I have spare axles for it and If i break the new Spartan 3 years down the road then I have still have the parts from this one to fix it with... Whats a Spartan run 250.00-300.00?

Why not get a 29 spline 8.25 out of a 97+ xj? They come with 3.55 gears(if automatic) and are comparable in strength to the d44. They are dime a dozen at jy's so you should be able to pick one up cheap. D35+Locker+35's is not a good idea at all. You can buy an 8.25 for less money then its gonna cost you in repairs for the d35.

Found an 8.25 last night for 100.00 just as you said with 3.55s called autozone and found out all the new brake components I just bought for the 35 will cross over. So I will definitely be upgrading.

If its the factory rear, and nobody swapped it for whatever reason, it should be 29 spline. Great price.

I recently swapped out 2 D35's for 8.25's. Both D35's were on nice XJ's I'd purchased and BOTH had bent axles. The first 8.25 I bought I paid $275 for, had 135k on it and went into my stepson's 1991. I swapped over all the rear brake hdwr from the D35. Perfect install, works like a champ. The second 8.25 was purchased from a different JY and turned into a PITA. After pimping the housing, converting to discs, installing new outer bearings & seals and installing a locker, I discovered that one of the axles was bent, and probably one of the carrier bearings is also bad. After a bunch of mucking around, and multiple trips to a JY an hour away I got a new axle installed...but the thing will still need to come apart for carrier & pinion bearings at some point.

Point is: Buyer beware. Even tho the 29 spline axles are beefy, they still git bent. Check before you lay down your cash. I wire brush the axle flange, rig up a dial indicator against it, slide a piece of tubing or hose down over one of the studs and twirl the thing around while watching the indicator. If runout is more than about 5-6 thou then it's sketchy. Mine was .028" runout on the bad side, the other side was .006.

For what its worth....
