Default Locker for the front axle question.

Im interested in getting a locker for my front DANA 30. I drive it alot in the winter time. Im interested in a lunchbox locker and was wondering how the handling would be in snow on the highway. Would it be all over the place or easy to control? Input would be greatly apreciated. Running short on funds or else I would get a selectable like an ox locker.

cant tell you how it'll handle on snow, but off-road in 4wd with a front locker my jeep seems to want to go in a straight line more than anything, and the steering wheel seems to be a little stiffer as well. ive also noticed that any axle that is locked will walk itself downwards on sideways inclines. on level ground & trailriding it feels fine though.
(i have an auto-locker in the front and a lincolnlocker in the back)

In 2wd it won't be an issue. Only locks up when the front axel is engaged.

With a 231TC you shouldn't be using the 4wd on the street anyway, so no issue.

nobody said the street.
he'll be using 4wd in the snow, or else he wouldnt be looking into a front locker.

also, autolockers require a little throttle to engage fully; not just by shifting to 4h/4l

Having a locker in the front while engaged sucks in the snow. I wouldn't recommend it unless its a selectable one.

He never said anything about using 4wd in the snow. Some people don't need 4wd for snow it all depends where you live and how much snow you get

Better then a rear ratcheting locker in the snow. With the rear locked it will want to fish tail out from under you when you apply some gas. With the front locker, when you hit the gas in 4 wheel your front end will actually pull you in the direction your tires are pointing, assuming you have decent tires. So around a corner you can slightly ease on the gas and turn your wheels into the corner where as a rear locker will push you strait and or cause your rear end to spin around. Don't try to take a corner at 90 mph in the snow, but you get the point.

Ive driven my lunchbox in the snow.
In 4wd it pretty much wants to drive in a straight line and you will notice the steering is a lot stiffer.
I only used 4wd if I really needed it. There is also some slippy sliding went make sharp turns. But I'm not running snow tires so I may not have felt its true affect.

Ya I will use it off road alot but I use it in the winter time alot. I have a detroit locker in my tahoe so I know how lockers handle in the rear. Sounding like from what ive heard I will just save y money for an ox locker. Any expieriences there? I like the cable engage cause you dont have the added fear of electronics not working and you dont risk pulling a hose off an air locker.

I run the Eaton E-Locker, not much in the way of electronics just a wired switch on the dash, and two wires running to the axle. I ran the wires along the top of my upper control arm and encased them in wire loom so they are protected, so pretty much if my rig is running my locker will work. Also I don't have to worry about air lines, o ring seals, or cables that need to be adjusted correctly so my locker will work when I need it.
