Little taller springs

My Jeep is stock height except the Crown leaf springs I put in last year lift the rear up a little high. Would like to level it out. I know I can use spacers, but was thinking of just putting in new coil springs.

Any springs that will lift the front 1.5" or? Maybe an application from another car?

Thanks.

I'm in the same situation after installing Crown leafs last week. I haven't seen any reference to using coils off another vehicle that would work. Right now I'm debating on two options. Rustys sells 2" lift coils or Moog CC782 coils with 3/4" Teraflex spacers. I can use the 2" coils and adjust my leaf shackles for a 3/4" lift.

Spacers would be the best thing to do.......or maybe some used 3" lift springs that have settled some (but coils don't really do that much)

and it's a pet peeve, but it ain't no car !!! it's a truck if you look on the emissions plate on the cowl under the hood.

OK Guys I have not tested this yet so you are on your own if you want to try it. I just went and measured the front coils on a ford explorer I have out back and found something interesting. They APPEAR to be the same measurements as the XJ but are mounted small end upside down on the bottom instead of the top like the jeep. And it's not smart enough to know the difference.

Now the Jeep coils are about .50" and the explorer coils are a little over .06. From what I figure the rate might be just enough more on the explorer coils to raise mine about 1.5 inches. Now this is a theory I am going to try after I get my motor back in but it really does look viable and still not make it ride too much rougher.

I asked around and no one has appeared to have tried this yet. So you can wait for me to check it or you can do some of you own measurements and coil rate comparisons yourself and give it a shot with a set from the wrecking yard. :)

That Jeep looks great in that post. Sounds like spacers would be good, didn't know they were that cheap. I'm a little worried about the heavy duty Moog springs over the OEM replacement, worried it would ride rougher. I also have 235/75-15 tires.

Also, the Crown leaf springs do settle after a while just a little bit.

You can get 1.5" lift on the front with ZJ V8 coils. Might be what you are looking for

And this makes sense. :) They would be rated a little higher.

EZEARL 10-06-2017 09:14 PM

Yea the Moog CC782 is a replacement for the ZJ V8 coils. They're a variable rate spring and according to Tbone whose XJ is in the link I posted even with a 3/4" spacer they give a very smooth ride.

The Moog CC782s with stock spring isolator will level out your Crown HD leafs perfectly. With that combination, you will be at exactly 1" over stock, front and rear. This combination will give you the same ride height as the stock Upcountry package.

If you want 1.5" of lift front like I have (shown in the aforementioned picture), use the Moog CC782 coils, remove the stock spring isolator, and use a 3/4" spacer with them. I did this because I wanted to use a longer shock with my setup and net more front suspension articulation when paired with swaybar disconnects.

In summary:

Moog CC782 w/stock isolator = 3/4"-1" lift (stock isolator is .25"-.5")

Moog CC782 w/o stock isolator + 3/4" spacer = 1.5" lift (I suppose we could start calling this "Upcountry Plus" or something)

Don't worry at all about the Moog coils riding stiffer than OEM coils. Being variable-rate, they actually ride like OEM coils or even softer for the first fraction of their travel, but they stiffen up as the suspension travel increases. This will give comfortable ride on the road with slightly more body roll, and great suspension flex and control off-road. The slight body roll can be improved by replacing the stock rubber swaybar frame bushings with poly ones.

Stock length shocks will work OK with these setups. However, as mentioned briefly above, I highly recommend to anyone considering a setup like mine that they fit longer shocks on their XJ. This is the only way to achieve more travel and articulation than stock, making the lift not only look better than stock, but also function better than stock. Even with longer shocks spec'd for 3" lifts, my front suspension is still shock-limited in extension. Keep in mind that doing this will take some thought in measurement of shock length, and aftermarket bumpstops also set at the proper length to protect the shock from damage. I can provide some guidance on that subject as well if requested. I researched and measured the hell out of all this before I did the upgrade.

OEM JK shocks, which can be had very cheaply, would be a great combination with this setup, IMO.

Well, sort of. :icon_wink:

If you go to the Moog website and click on the fitment tab for the Moog CC782 coils, you will see that they suggest a much wider range of Jeep applications than just the ZJ V8. Note that there are more XJ applications listed than ZJ applications: http://www.moog-suspension-parts.com/moog-cc782

Don't let the "Year range" column fool you. These will fit any XJ.

I'm pretty sure that the weight of a 4.0L L6 isn't much less than a 5.2L V8, if any. It's a heavy chunk of iron.

EZEARL 10-07-2017 07:53 AM

Glad you replied here. Yesterday before I posted that I did a quick check looking up ZJ V8 at Rock Auto just to double check that I had seen the CC782 listed when I first got into this "Up Country" project.

You have me sold on those springs! Thanks!

On second thought, I believe this might be inaccurate. The CC782 coils plus 3/4 spacer provide 1.5" lift. However, the 3/4 spacers I have are actually taller than .75", because it is assumed that you will remove the stock isolator when you use them.

So, in theory, it probably should be more like this:

Moog CC782 w/stock isolator = 3/4" - 1" lift (isolator is .25"-.5")

Moog CC782 w/o stock isolator + 3/4" spacer = 1.5" lift (spacer is actually 1.25")

I never mounted the Moog coils with the stock isolator to measure actual lift, so this is conjecture, for the most part. Reports in the reviews section of Amazon state that the coils alone lifted 1".

EZEARL 10-11-2017 12:08 PM

I've read where a number of XJ owners have had to "fine tune" the front suspension. Even if your info doesn't work to a T it's DEFINITELY a GOOD starting point. Below is an example of how it can vary from the guy who I guess started the Upcountry duplication thing.

"the Moogs gave exactly one inch of lift over stock. Factory height should be 6.75 inches +/- 0.5 inch, and my measured height was 7.75 inches; this is also the exact Upcountry option factory height. Do note that my measurement includes a Warn Trans4mer 60766 Grille Guard and Warn 39653 Brush Guards, which adds about 70 plus pounds to the front moment arm ...which is a round-about way of intimating that if you do NOT have a rather heavy brush guard hanging off the front end, your height will likely be 1/4 to 1/2 inch higher than mine.

Tbone289 10-11-2017 12:15 PM

Keep in mind that the guy who wrote that on Amazon used .75" spacers in his setup, just as I did. So, with a heavy front bumper/brush guard, he ended up with a 1" lift, where I ended up with a 1.5" lift with stock bumper after springs and spacers.

But, you're right. You have to take everything into account. Many of those people in the reviews are stating what height they got comparing to their worn out coils as well, rather than the height compared to stock height from the factory, as I have.
