Default Lift and Handling?

Today I saw an interesting looking XJ. It was about the same height as a newer Honda CRV, so not a huge lift. But with very wide tires that didn't stick out past the fenders. I tried to catch up to him to figure out how he set it up, but for some weird reason his cherokee could actually handle better than mine. (I was squealing tires trying to catch up on the ramp)

Just wondering if anyone has done or seen a setup like this and how it could be done.

lift coils are stiffer than stock, and he probably had good shocks. Wider stance also helps handling. On 33s and a 2.5" lift with Bilstein 5100 shocks and no sway bars my XJ handles better than it did stock with both sways.

Alright, figured all lifts have softer shocks for more suspension travel, but that does sound like a nice do it all XJ. Thanks.

Shocks won't affect suspension travel unless they hit their limits. Stiff springs, however, will. At any rate, Good firmly valved shocks, reasonably stiff springs, and he probably had the front sway bar. The small lift raises the center of gravity, however the wider tires compensate for most of that.

To add: My XJ when stock was shorter both in height and length than a Pontiac Vibe (small hatchback)- even with the 4" lift it is shorter than many, if not most SUV's on the road.

Yeah there is a 2014 kia soul in my driveway and it always amazes me how it feels so much smaller to drive and has half the ground clearance but is almost the same height and length as the cherokee.
