I'm sure SteelersXJ will hop in here, he runs 36's on 9" of lift. He runs a 8.25 outback with welded spiders and open front 30 on 36" Super Swampers I think. I believe his shafts are chromoly or something stronger.

well man, im running 36/12.50/15 TSLs on a welded 35
Its been like that for years before i got it, my uncle built it.
Its not a DD, so it dose not see MUCH road time.
I live in florida, so most of what it see's is sand, mud and flat trails
and its held up quite well, so it would depend on the type of trails
you will be wheeling on. im not saying that the 35 is strong tho.
I do plan on doin a axle upgrade when/if my 35 brakes.

your lift will take the 36's, unfortunatly the D35 will fail at some point, generally under load when your in no good position for a failure. No way around it.

Actually one of my crew runs 38x12.5 TSL's on a 35/30, regeared to 4:10 or 5:13, don't remember which, but either way it's still living.

I think you will be able to clear the 36"s. My '91 had 5" of lift and trimmed fenders but i modified the rears pretty good and i wheeled 35" tires on it. Full flex would rub the slightest but had no harm to the tires.

Yeah, the 35 is a ticking time bomb. It may last a day, or you may never break it. My girlfriends xj is on 35" km2s with the d35. No problems so far but she hasnt wheeled it as hard as i would.

At a minimum, fresh bearings and seals in the D35, lunchbox locker, NO Spool, consider building a truss. Your real enemy will be flex of the tubes and the tubes from the dif housing. Remember your 35 one day when you are very stuck and have the urge to get rammy. Keep a cool head.

All depends on how you drive and where. Mud and just street driving, you would be fine. Leaving it open is a very smart thing to do. Just be light on the throttle and you will be fine. Got a buddy that has ran 35s on his 97 TJ since it was new on his Dana 35. Rockcrawling too, never broke a shaft. Now he does have the super 35 kit tho.
