I have similar plans except I'm not sure what axles to go with. Trying to be at around 5" and run 35s. Long arms, 4.88 gears, sliders, skids. So would d44s all around be good for that set up?

how do you wheel?

if you wheel rather lightly with more finesse than hammering down. i wouldnt hesitate to run a hp dana30 and 44. if you plan on beating on it i wouldnt hesitate to run a pair of 44's with aftermarket shafts (at least in the front) stock front 44 shafts are weaker than xj dana30 shafts with the 297 u-joint

The d60s are in my mind. I have a buddy with a camanche with 7.5" of lift and running 37s with 4.56 gears and lockers. Does awesome on the rocks and wheelin. Also he drives it on a daily basis.

Im also looking at a 44 front and 9 inch rear. Thats what is on the camanche. No problems and the same set up has been on 2 Cherokees and now the camanche with no probs. Id say 6 total years running that set up. Seems bulletprof to me.

4.56s on 37s is undergeared no matter how you slice it on a cherokee unless you have some transfercase modification thrown in.

just saying it isnt ideal. i do personally know someone running that combo, not by choice though.

what else has he wheeled to compare it to?

if someone drives a geo metro as their first car without ever being in a car previously of course they will think its nice

I dont need to explain all of what he has wheeled with. It seems to me like a good setup is all I have said. This guy I have wheeled with has been wheeling a long time. He has owned over 50 different trucks and Jeeps. I have seen him climb up cars with his Jeep now. He has never broken anything since he has had this setup. Over 4 years and wheeling at least twice a month. Not easy trails but something ranked 5 and over. Its a good rig and fun to wheel in. Our group that we will with is the Mile High Jeep club.

You can also see pics of it and along with some of our wheelin pics: http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t317/abadk5blaz/

The drivetrain is also under the black Cherokee before he rolled it. Ill get more pics up when I have time.

I'm at a good 8" of lift without a SYE -BUT- the 2.8L is not a torque monster and I'm always light on the pedal. . . so far so good. (no t-case drop either and no drive-line vibes)

as far al i knew the only x-member support is under the rear end of the transmission and the x-fer case doesn't have it's own dedicated support. (this might be different on 4.0L's??)

xmember holds up the tranny and the tcase. so when you move one you move the other. this is why TC drops arent recommended because it messes with things such as engine mounts and tranny mounts.

Sorry, what I was trying to explain was there is no mount for the t-case. It is suspended on the end of the trans. therefor it's actually a cross-member drop which does drop the t-case too. There is much debate on if this is a good idea or not. I've heard that you want more of a similar angle on the back u-joint vs. front u-joint (on the rear shaft) and i've also heard that it's a good idea, especially if you don't have a SYE kit because the slip yoke is in a more linear alignment. (this I'm leaning toward) but hey, If i destroy my t-case it will be replaced with bigger and better - as always.

well your 86 has an internal slip yoke which will be much less prone to vibes then the 96+ external slip yoke design. You will be "ok" for some time but it still would be a very good idea to get a SYE.

Well I decided to go with the Rustys' 3 inch w/ full leafs, and 31 inch firestone destination M/Ts. and the 15x8 cragar soft 8s in black. I already got my k&n, tb spacer, skyjaker quick disconnects, husky floor linners, and cragars, from quadratec.com. although the snowbaord rack is on back order. but no im just waiting for my lift kit and tires to get here.
