keep my rims or new rims?
 

So my cherokee has a 2" spacer lift. I was given some springs that are for sure bigger/thicker than the stock springs so I'm thinking they'll give me a 2" lift and I can use them in place of the spacer....

regardless, I would love to put 30-31" tires under my jeep without cutting fenders. can I do that with the stock rims? if not, will an after market rim work, and what specs do I have to look for in an after market rim? I would like to stick with a 15" rim.

Thoughts?

(just a note, this is how I bought it, so just trying to just use what I got till I have more $)

Wheels* not rims, and yeah you can run a 31x10.5 on stock 15x7 and looks pretty good(i did for a while) your tires will rub the LCAs at full lock(just adjust the steering stops). As far as not trimming, you wont rub until you disconnect the sway bar, if you do youll end up popping off the flares. May I ask why you're against trimming?

well, this jeep will be pulling mostly DD duty for the wife for the next 18months or so. at which point we'll be buying a 7 passenger vehicle for her, and then I'll be going crazy with this, and I plan on doing a low COG with 33"s and I just don't want to double up on work. All I really plan on doing right now is putting on an actual AT tire (currently has highway all seasons) putting on some skid plates, CB radio (have it, just need to install), recovery points, and just keep it running nice.

Last jeep we had was a 2012 patriot with a 2" lift and 30" tires. it did about 80% of what we wanted, but Hated making car payments... so I bought the $500 cherokee, we have 3 little kids, so I cannot lift it too high either as it is a pain to get them in and out of it. but we like to go camping, fishing, and exploring, so want something that can get us there.

On my 91 which was increadlibly beat and the rear leafs were sagging a lot, had tires that measured to be 29.5 inches with about half tread. I still had plenty of space. I know I could put the 31's on my 99 on to my 91. I wouldnt go offroading with 31s on it but yes Im sure you can put 31s no problem for a DD.

And Rims is a correct term for it, but normally its referring to people putting 20 inch rims on their Ghetto cruiser. So most people call them Wheels.

Yeah, for 31s you would need longer bumpstops.

And rims is not the right term, Its wheel, the Rim is part of the wheel. I came from the Euro scene and you have no Idea how much I've seen this argument, **** ton of ricers asking what we think of there rimz yo. Really started getting annoying

I live in ghetto arizona, so rims, wheels, steelies, etc, are all acceptable around here! :)

It will be taken off road... A lot, Even in my patriot I was going off road 2-3 times a month.

But it also has to do double duty as a kid hauler for when my wife needs to drive somewhere. She's a stay at home mom, so doesn't have to drive a lot, but it needs to be something she can get herself, and the kids in and out of easily.

so probably looking at 30" tires on the stock rims for now.

While I wont argue with Wikipedia. This may be the Soda vs Pop and Bubbler vs Water fountain situation. Its all about where youre from. The chain shops around here call them rims while the more independent or specialized shops call them wheels. It all depends on your audience.

Ill admit a few years ago I thought the wheel was referring to the Tire and Wheel/Rim.

Sorry but they are not all terrain tires. I need a good set of all terrain...

Well, technically a rim is the part of the wheel that holds the tire on. its kinda like calling a tire a "bead"

Yeah, they call them rims around here to, bunch of mexi's. Its just a pet peeve from owning my Jetta.

any suggestions on tires?

I live in Wisconsin and have cooper discover a/t 3. No where to really wheel here. But they are amazing in snow. It's more of a road tire but for driving through fields(not tearing them up) they are good too. I'm getting 18-19 mpg with them and I drive rough.

On my 91 I had Wranglers. Those were more aggressive road tires. Got about 16 mpg with them. If I was getting cheap off-road tires I'd get something like them in 31-33 inches. I had great fun with those doing mild wheeling in a stock xj in Wisconsin.

Personally I would buy new "WHEELS" that would be an improvement on your XJ now even with the smaller tires and for later when you step-up to a 33".

The size are 15x8 with 3 3/4-4" backspacing, it will allow the 31" or 30 whatever you decide a better stance off road also with the 8" rim. Then you won't have the LCA issue either of the tire rubbing with the stock arms. I ran up to a 33" tire for a while (3" lift) stock arms.
