Jeep cherokee xj 2.5 VM engine lack of power and smoke when on idle
Hi All ,
I am pleased to have joined you wonderful forum ! Little new to this! So hope somebody can help me out? Thankyou.
I just bought a 1998 jeep cherokee with 2.5 vm engine in it only to use now and again and was told it had a problem ! Car starts great sounds great temperature does not go up more that 90degrees ! But when I start it now and again it throws a white misty colour smoke out then it stops then again? Took it for a drive around the block and up a hill no power? Can hear turbo a little!
Anybody had this problem?
Regards and thanks to All......

MAP sensor is on the throttle body on your year I believe. On the bottom of it going into the throttle body is a small rubber elbow that likes to crack and split.
Take care in removal and install. Not really a way to check the MAP(that I know of) it either works or not.
Also check over all of your vac lines.

Dude sorry didn't look at where your location was, and missed the VM part my lookout.
Diesels are different, may take me a minute to help there, we haven't had a diesel cherokee in the states for a while.

Found some stuff on your 2.5, it is plagued with fueling and turbo issues.
Seem to have:
injector failure likes the #1
A fuel heat sensor on the fuel rail
Turbo waste gate will stop working
Along with the stuff in the thread already mentioned.

If I recall correctly the VM 2.5 eats head gaskets too. I think it had two of them... Go figure.
What does the white stuff from the exhaust smell like? Sweet like coolant or like diesel?

You know what would be kinda cool? VM 2.8L from a KJ.
1994–2001 Jeep Cherokee, 118 hp (88 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 300 N·m (221 lb·ft) at 2,000 rpm
versus
2001–2004 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty (power: 150 hp (110 kW); torque: 251 lb·ft(360 Nm)). Only in Europe
2005–2007 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty (power: 163 hp (120 kW); torque: 295 lb·ft(400 Nm))
The 2.8 in the KK made even more torque :O
lol

Highmileage, if you want a diesel engine in an Jeep, use the 2.7 TD Nissan engine and trans combo from an Nissan pickUp. The late 80s engines had real timing gears ( no belts ) and nearly no electrics and it fits in the engine bay of an XJ/MJ. And the engine when properly maintained will last easily 500000+kms ( 300000+ miles ).

Can't do that in CALI, emissions requirements. You "can" but it has to be a newer diesel than the year vehicle and other stuff. Last I knew here you can go diesel to gas fairly easy but from gas to diesel is a pain.
Don't have to worry about the mileage thing am well past 300,000mi currently working on 450,000. I just past 441,000 two days ago.

You have two problems.
1) White smoke.
It is an indicator that at least one glow plug is not working.Check all of them. torque is about 15Nm. If you overtighten them, then the ring gap closes and the glow plug is ruined.
2) Fuel issue.
You obviously have some air either in the filter or in the fuel lines. This is a very common problem. Mostly caused by exchanging the fuel filter and not replacing the O-rings with fresh ones.
Temperature is already on the high side, it should sit around 82°, thats the second line above the 40°C line.
The factory installed air filter is too small for that engine. Make sure you replace it with a fresh unit.
Don't worry about the turbo whistle- it's pretty normal.
