u dont have to change the tranny, you just have to remove the tailshaft on the tranny and put a t-case on, along with the new front axle and steering and everything else

Uh, on some of the Manuals I am not sure, but on the AW4 and the Borg Warner T-5 type you can't do the tailshaft without taking the whole trans apart and totally rebuilding it with the 4x4 shaft and tail housing. Easier to just get a 4x4 trans if thats the case. $100 for a trans "Auto". If you go to the U-Pull it yard you can get everything for about $450. I just did it myself and it was cake to do.
But if you have a friend that can help, you will better off "especially at the U-Pull it yard" They don't allow jacks. Sucks.
But don't listen to anyone, it's easy, just heavy.
Just make sure it is not cheaper to start off with one that is already 4x4. I only paid $300 with 170k on it and it has no rust. "never driven in the snow, 2wd" so it was worth it. The paint sucks but the body and frame are emaculate. So, I went for it.
good luck with it.

It's cool.
You may be right about some of the other transmissions. I only know about the T-5 B&W type and the AW4 automatic. But these are the only ones worth putting in a Jeep. The other older types are not very good.
And you are correct on the steering. I left the 2WD arms and stuff and just bolted it up to the knuckles and the alignment was almost perfect.
It was fun to do. I saved a lot of money doing it myself and starting with a 2WD and It's nice for what I have in to it.
Take it easy.
