Default Inspecting a locker

I'm in negotiations with someone selling a 29 spline 8.25 with a powertrax no slip installed. I need this axle because mine is shot, and I need to get back to college in a week, so the fact that it is locked it just a bonus. When I go to check it out, I'm gonna pop the cover and give the diff a once over like normal, but I don't know much about lockers. Is there anything in particular I should keep an eye out for when inspecting it? Thanks.

Rotate the axle shafts and make sure it ratchets properly. look for any burrs or wear on the gear teeth and look for oil soaked in out parts of the axle (Assuming it's been used recently). It might need new brake lines or hardware also.

So I should have a friend hold one of the axles shafts as I turn the other to make sure it unlocks properly? And I was gonna replace the brake equipment anyway.

You can put a breaker bar with a 19mm socket on the opposite side & do it yourself.
Also, bring a telescoping magnet & dunk it in the gear oil & look for ANY metal peices.
To be on the safe side ask for or get a set of spider gears-just in case.

I'll be having a friend with me (buddy system with craigslist haha), so I'm sure he can hold it. I'll bring my tools anyway. I do plan on cracking open the diff and draining the fluid too, so I can check for metal that way. And thats a good call on the spider gears. I already have an 8.25 in my jeep now (29 spline), so if need be I can just take the spiders from that.
