Ideas anyone?
I have a 2000 xj limited 2wd. I've been thinking lately that I want it to be different from how it is now, in its bone stock form. I've thought of a few ideas, engine swaps, transmission swaps, 4wd conversion, etc. I've thought about dropping in a cummins 4bt or a Volkswagen tdi motor. If I do an engine swap I would like it to be diesel. I've also thought about putting in a ax15 or a nv3550. I wasn't sure how hard that would be to do, with the wiring and what not. Also, how hard is it to find a 2wd version of an ax15 or nv3550? Would it be easier to do a manual swap and 4wd conversion together? I do have a np231 transfer case and a d30 front axle from a 91 xj, but it was an automatic and I know the spline counts are different. The main reason I want to do this as opposed to selling it and buying another one is that the body is pretty good and seems to be a good platform for a some sort of project. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated

Lockers, 4.56s, 31s or 32s, WJ knuckle/brake swap (custom crossover steering included), zj rear disc conversion, 3-4" lift with TNT Y-Link upgrade, JB SYE, steel bumpers, winch, and supercharger kit (jeepsuperchargers.com).

What rubberside said. ^^^
It's cheaper and easier to sell the 2wd and BUY a 4x4, than to convert.. If you go oil burner, then it don't matter, your doing a complete redesign anyway.

The problem with selling it is that the title is in my dad's name. I can do whatever to it, just can't sell it. I asked him a while ago if I could sell it and he didn't want to sell such a reliable vehicle. But then again I wanted to buy an integra with 300000 miles so maybe that's why

A 4bt is 700 lbs and pricey to get used. The vw tdi are still cheap to buy used running. The tdi you can get a adapter to use any jeep stick http://www.cotybuilt.com/hardware.html If you want to make it 4wd its easier to have a 4wd trans from the start. No way i would buy that integra with that many miles i know its a honda but its on its last leg.

Also, is there a way to use a tdi with an aw4? I assume that an ax15 and an aw4 would have the same bolt pattern, but I know there are differences beyond that like flex plate/flywheel and torque converter etc. also there's the issue of electronics. Is there an external shift controller that will work with the aw4?

Okay - makes more sense now. Please don't think I asked out of disapproval - just curious. If I were you, I'd just drive it, wrench on it, use it as a learning tool and when the title can be signed over to you, then do something silly like diesel swap it (I've always thought this was flat-out unnecessary)
Here you go though. Read:

Regarding the 4wd conversion or manual conversion - AX15s are more common than the NV3550 which is, more expensive. If you want to 4wd swap, plenty of dudes on here have done it. Axle, transfer case, transmission, driveline and TCM (if you stay auto) and you're good to go.

No proof on the engine, but I've known the guy for years and I believe him. I could tell the engine wasn't original to the car anyway. Idk if the mileage was correct, but probably not 300000. He sold the car to someone else anyway.
