i have 3.54 gears, I need 4.56, do i need new carriers
I have an 87 xj with D44 rear & D30 front with 3.54 ratio and open carriers. To change to 4.56 will I need to change my carriers. also I use it as a daily driver it has a 6" lift with 35s and im thinking of a mini spool in the d44 and a LSD in the front D30 will the mini spool in the rear be a bad idea? should I just get an aussie locker for the rear.

Yes you need new carriers front and rear. I'd advise against the mini spool for a daily driver unless you like buying tires.

Carrier break is 3.73....so you would need a 3.73 and up carrier. Don't put a spool in a daily driver. Get an aussie or lockrite...any kind of lunchbox, or a selectable locker.

Profile says you live in Washington, a spool on a DD with snow and ice would be almost impossible to drive. A lunch box in the front and rear would be much better, and since you are going to 4.56 gears you could also go to a full carrier selectable at the same time.

I wouldn't go with either, They are both full case traction differentials, so you have to mess with the ring and pinion.
I would take time to research lockers and figure out what you want to do with your Cherokee before buying anything. Just because it is cheap isn't a reason to purchase something.
A lunch box locker is a locker that goes inside of the differential carrier and replaces the spider gears. It isn't as strong as a full carrier locker, but you don't have to mess with the ring and pinion to install it so it is pretty easy, usually a couple of hours.

So this is what im thinking, buy two open cariers so I can upgrade to 4.56 gears, then install some aussie lockers in the open cariers. Correct me if this wont work. Also how hard is it two shim the gears?
Thanks

Did the same thing with my old axles and it worked great. If you have never set up gears I'd say pay someone to do it so you don't have to buy gears twice. It's not all that hard but very precise and takes forever plus you need a few special tools.
