i have run headers to the mid/down pipe with no cat or cat back, and it sounded like a busted tractor when cold, but ok when hot. but you need the down pipe on there due the the O2 sensor being in it. unless you have a renix system (87-90) then it is in the header. still it would be too close to an open air source, your car would be permanently in open loop getting 8mpg the whole time

Ive dumped it right after the cat and that was way too loud. idling was obnoxious.

IMO, if you want loud straight pipe it with a glasspack. Open headers can actually hurt your performance. google exhaust scavenging- a lot of people say you need "backpressure", well thats BS and a myth. But scavenging is a good thing.. Hope it helps..

So on my jeep "farm use only" i have open heads. I get 16-18 mpg on" the farm". Sounds just like a tractor. Dead serious.

My xj sounds like its got a gnarly cam lope/ drag car sound going on... It sounds sick.. but very obnoxious.. I smashed my cat on some rocks and proceeded to pump out all of the material at the same time I also cremped and destroyed my muffler back so its cut off after the now "gutted" cat....

Technically this is a topic against forum rules.

Discussing the removal or modification on the cat is against Federal regulations.
