How the heck did I get 17.25mpg?
Here is my XJ.
1999, stock 4.0, AW4, np231 with SYE. 5" lift, 15x8 steelies, 33"x12.5" TrXus MTs. Jcr rock sliders, rigid front and rear bumpers. Stock D30/8.25. 3.55 gears
When it was completely stock, I eeked out 20mpg a few times. In its current state, I've never really paid attention, but usually around 10-13mpg. One time towing a trailer when moving, we got 8mpg (all calculated via GPS because my odometer is off).
Last night we were traveling to my in-laws. Filled up at a shell station at exit 27 on I-85, then drove 69 miles to exit 96 on I-85 (all in sc). Then stopped at that exit and topped off. Filled to the brim with 4.05 gallons.
69 miles/4 gallons = 17.25mpg.
This was at about 60-70 mph the whole way. Loaded with myself, wife, 5month old son, dog, a weeks worth of clothes for everyone, a bunch of guns and food, and all the Christmas gifts. So it wasn't like we were especially light.
Has anyone else gotten mileage like this on stock drivetrain and 33s? Is my math wrong? Am I an idiot?

Yup. The amount of difference between when that pump shut off versus others is enough to make it seem that high on such a small amount of fuel.

Both times filling up I pumped it a few times after it shut off, to the point I was getting a little backflow up the filler neck. Seemed pretty full and pretty reproducible to me. Anyways, I know my jeep doesn't get 17.25mpg all the time or even over an entire tank, but over that 70 mile stretch it did. Gives me a little hope for interstate travel with it.
Now the stretch from Shelby to Asheville, I bet was closer to 10-12mpg, cus you go from 850' elev to 2700' at my parents house.

I actually just did a 2 tank average, got about 16.5 mpg, running an average of 2,200 RPM in 3rd gear (automatic) on true 33" tall tires, thinking about running in 2nd gear on the highway... that would be about 3,500 to 4200 rpm
