Default How to build a cralwer???

Ok so this is for people to give information to me and NOT to bash me or talk mess.......


I got back from a wheeling trip today and i want to make the cherokee a little more capable on the trails......


Right now the jeep has a 3 inch rc lift, 31 inch km2s, bumper and winch.



Now i am thinking of putting a lunch box locker in the front, going to 4.5" rubicon express coils, shackle relocation kit rear, lower control arms, t case drop,new shocks, and upgraded tie rod and track bar.

Is there anything i might be missing? i am trying to piece together a lift on the cheap side.

i do not recommend a t-case drop bracket. Go with the IRO hack n tap with the refurbished drive shaft its a lot better and only 200.

Don't see how that stuff is optional if he wants a crawler..... Lockers are a must. No t case drop for sure. Armor and big meats.

Agreed, the t case drop may eliminate drive line vibration but robs ground clearance

so you want a more capable rock crawler? focus more on bigger tires, high clearance skids, and lockers. a big lift and big flex wont get you as far down the trail.

Imo the best easy setup to build is a xj with a 4.5 inch lift and 35s. Lockers front and rear gear it to 488s or 538s if you swap axles. A built 44 front and ford 9 in the rear with box tube sliders that replace the rocker panels. If you have an automatic trans than gearing the t case isn't a must with low diff gears. Then do the little things right like bump stops new u joints new brakes ect.
It can be done for about 2500-3k if you find good deals on stuff and don't have to have brand new everything.

Edit: Do not get a t case drop kit. Those are stupid that's like gettin a tire size reduction kit all you do is lose ground clearance. You'll also want to plate the frame rails and add skid plates as mentioned before.

Re shocks
Re 4.5" coils
Re 3.5" springs
Rc shackle relocation bracket
Iro adjustable track bar
Iro hd tie rod
Spartan locker for front
Home made disco for front.
Remove rear sway bar.
Get longer brake lines.
Re lower control arms.
T case drop. (for now until i can get the sye)


If i am missing anything let me know, all the re stuff i am buying from seriouse off road.


The plan is to be running my 31/10.50/R15 bfg km2s, on a 4.5 inch flexy lift, and a locked front. that should start me out good for now until i can afford better stuff.

after you lift I'd say SYE before any of that other stuff. also just get a V8 ZJ tie rod. and dont forget a new carrier for that front locker

Chris,
Here's my $.02, in no particular order.

Armor
Rock Sliders
Gas Tank Skid
Bumpers with recovery points
Bellypan or t-case skid.

Axles/Drivetrain
Re-gear for the tire size you plan on running.
Selectable locker up front, any locker out back....but I prefer a selectable there as well. (Personal preference)
Depending on what axles you have..Alloy shafts.
SYE (H&T or a short shaft kit)
Beefy LCA mounts (3/16" min) w/ skid plates.
Disc brakes on all 4 corners and the correct proportioning valve at the M/C.
Braided SS brakelines.

Suspension
This is not the place to cheap-out.

Longarms....Really strong long arms!

The correct length shocks. Install the springs and long arms and then measure for the correct length. Bilstein's FTW.

Limiting straps. FYI, cheap straps will stretch...don't buy 'em.

Shackle relocation boxes or Boomerang Shackles to improve rear axle articulation.

Bumpstops. Lots of people over look these and end up cutting up their tires when they stuff them into their wheel wells. just like the shocks, measure for them after installing your longarms and new rear leafs.

By adding a bunch of armor you'll be adding considerable weight, so a firmer set of springs might be a better choice than a set of soft/sponge springs.

Steering
Get rid of the crappy OEM Steering.
1 Ton steering or similar.

definately dont skimp on the armor if you want your rig to last in the rocks.
