Default Help! Sheared off Lug Nut Studs

I own an '01 Cherokee with a 3" lift on 31s mounted on stock wrangler/cherokee wheels. I get a shake between 60-60 mph. On Wed. my coworker handed me a sheared off lug nut and stud. It was mine. Then on Sat. It started to shake worse and I pulled over to find a second had came off of the same driver side front. Towed away.

A couple of my Jeep friends say they were too tight and a few car guys I trust said they have never seen this and had no idea what happened. The mechanic I trust the most said he, too, had no idea what happened. he suggested checking the torque each week.

Please help!

You can get new studs pressed in.

I would think they were on too tight.

Replacing a broken stud can be done at home....
Jack up the Jeep, chock one tire or place on jack stand and remove the rim from the vehicle.
You can use a punch and a small sledge hammer to drive out the remainder of the stud.
Replacement studs are usually available at the local autoparts store.
Before inserting the new stud; apply a small amount of grease to the splined area, insert thru the back. You can use some stacked washers and a open ended lug nut to draw in the new stud.
When reinstalling the rim I would suggest when tightening the lug nuts; you use a torque wrench set to at least 80 lbs/ft to ensure the new stud is fully seated.

The question you should ask yourself is WHY did two studs snap off !!!
I would agree with the previous post about death wobble... being a possible cause.

My 00' XJ does this about a week after I rotate my tires. L/F as well. I just re-torque it and doesn't happen again.

Sounds like the nuts were torqued down to tight, lugs should be torqued down around 100lbs, should always check to make sure after anybody else takes your wheels off, say for like inspection when the numb skull that puts them back on with an impact gun !

Thanks for the help. It is fixed. I guess I will buy a torque wrench.

As far as the death wobble, I am told I do not need an alignment, balance, or drop pitman arm. Any Ideas?

Nothing wrong with impacting them on as long as they use a torque stick.

Default Death wobble?

What is a death wobble? I may have a serious prob with my Jeep. When accelerating from a stop there is a heavy vibration in rear end. Yesterday I heard a clunking noise and found 2 lugs broke off right rear wheel.

If you have two broken studs your wheel was probably walking around causes the sounds. And most of the time a broken stud is from someone over torquing a lug nut.Lug nuts should be torqued twice once in the air and again later on the ground with the full weight of the car.
