Default Help with new axle purchase!

Ok so I've had a bad pinion bearing in my 8.25 for a while now.
Recently found a guy selling his d44/d30 from his xj
They have 4.88s
Chromoly shafts
Lunchbox front and rear
Beefy spring perches
Lube locker gaskets
He's asking $1100

They have been sitting outside and need to be gone through.

What should I go through to check before I buy em? And what needs to be replaced before I swap? Obviously new brakes and wheel bearigs anything else really?

I like to check pinion for to much play, ring teeth for chips, metal shavings in fluid, splines for twisting, leaky seals, ujoints, cracks in housing, balljoint play. that's pretty much all the big stuff. depends on how thoroughly you want to go through them. you dont live in the rust belt so they should be in decent shape.

ask him why he hasnt sold them sooner, that's just money laying in the side yard rotting. also check prices of all the axle parts, as you find bad or rusty parts name the price and start talking him down. I'd like to see you pick up those axles for $800 or so

$800 was what I was thinking too. He says he's moving so that's a bonus. The covers have been left on so ill take em off and inspect the r&p. thanks for the help man

If you open them up, look for a stamping on the ring gear to make sure they're 4.88's. I've seen a few people before trying to advertise geared axles that actually aren't. It's an easy thing to pass by. Also ask him who set them up.
