Default Headlight Upgrade

Been searching around at different options for upgrading the stock headlights. Would this kit be good?

I am guessing I would need to upgrade the headlight harness with a custom one?

Thought about just getting some Silverstars and calling it done. What are some options? Not wanting to do a retro fit.

I just did the Putco harness upgrade using the SilverStar sealed beams on my '96 XJ. Made a BIG difference and will be all the headlights I need.

I don't know anything about the lights in your post but you would want to upgrade the harness no matter what lights you'll use.

Start with the putco harness first. Then decide where you want to go.

Yep.

And I'd avoid anything that says "crystal or diamond cut". Those headlight assemblies scatter the light like crazy

If anyone is wondering about how the SilverStar sealed beams are (w/ Putco harness) I can tell you that I've been comparing them to the lights I see on other vehicles and they are brighter than most. I do most of my driving on rural roads and my lights are adjusted to WV inspection regs (stock height XJ). Nothing to add about the hi beams. They're GREAT. The lo beams give more than ample light (I was even flashed a couple times by on coming vehicles) but what I really like is that at about 15' or so there is a soild narrow beam on the road that extends from berm to berm. Ought to make for nice driving in the foggy times we'll be getting soon.

I did the Putco Harness and went with Rampage H4 headlights. It was within my budget and gave me better lighting since I spend most of my time driving on country roads with zero light.

It took all of about an hour or so to pull the sealed beams, mount the relays, plug the new lights in and tidy up the new harness with zip ties. In all I felt it was a pretty good deal for the price I paid and the greater light output I got.

What is a good housing that don't cost out the yin yang?

I would just throw some Silverstar sealed beams on there but I like the clear housing look.

I run the Hella's but with the factory harness, they did no better than the OEM headlights. If you could get a true 12-15volts to the headlights, any light will be better than what you have right now. The factory headlamp switch and all the relays in between really drop the voltage when it finally reaches the headlights.. between 9 - 11 volts.

This is the exact reason most of us have went to the Putco or EAutoWorks H4 Harness. Light output just with that addition alone, has to be close to 150% improvement.
