Head light trouble
Hey guys, I HID headlights and when I turn them on both headlights come on but the left one is imeadiate while the right one is dim but then gets brighter. After about 5 minutes of both lights on, the right one then shuts off and only my left one is running. I was talking with my friend and he said that it could be a ballast issue and that it is getting over heated. I'm thinking that it might be a grounding issue. I bought the jeep with these already installed and they worked fine up until about a month ago. Thanks for any help in advance.

First of all please get rid of the hid illegal headlights. They're blinding and annoying. Second I hope the headlight harness is upgraded (could be part of the problem) third you're probably going to continue to have lots of problems especially if they're cheap hids.

Do you have projector housings,Are they on a relay or the cheapo ebay plug and play stuff?

I believe they are the cheap ebay stuff. I don't believe that they are illegal in Minnesota but I will look it up. The PO put these on, I bought it with them already installed.

Not having them in a projector housing will blind other drivers which can get you a ticket. And the cheapo ebay kits are total junk they never last long its best to remove it and go back to stock,Or upgrade to better headlight housings and a harness kit with the relays.

HID's are illegal in every state in any vehicle that didn't come with them even if you do it right with quality parts and projectors.
If you do HID despite the law, use quality bulbs and ballasts, and use HID projectors (there is such a thing as halogen projectors, and these are NOT correct). Random ebay garbage and halogen housings is a fantastic way to waste a bunch of the light you just paid money to get and to dangerously blind oncoming traffic. Do it right or don't do it at all. My favorite approach to HID in the XJ is to use quality bulbs/ballasts and Morimoto projectors from https://www.theretrofitsource.com/. You can find multiple writeups on how to retrofit projectors into any ol' H4 halogen housing (Autopal is a good choice since they're so cheap). Also, read this post: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/headlights-203245/ |
Okay, I wasn't aware that they were illegal.
I do not want to spend to much on these so I am thinking about these Rampage H4's http://www.quadratec.com/products/97009_501_07.htm |
Sounds to me like one of your ballasts has taken a crap. I had a similar problem and ended up going with a Putco wiring harness, Autopal E-code housings, and Sylvania Silverstar Ultra bulbs. It came in around $120 all off of Ebay and it blows my old HIDs out of the water. With this setup on lowbeam I can see further and more clearly than the HIDs on high.
