Have you used Yakima crossbar towers on the factory rails?

Have you used Yakima crossbar towers on the factory rails?
The factory crossbars on my XJ look pretty flimsy under the weight of my kayak, so I'd like to replace the crossbars - preferably with Yakima's round bars. Question is, once I remove the factory crossbars, which, if any, of Yakima's towers will mount to the factory roof rails? Anyone have any experience here?

I used the yakima landing pad #2. They mount right to the factory rails, then your towers and round bar will work perfect. I put my kayak up there and have never had an issue. Bought mine used on ebay.

Which tower depends on your model year. The early models, like mine, use a different style. I have them, and they work very, very well. Instead of Yakima cross tubes, I used 3/4" PVC-coated rigid conduit as the outer dimensions are identical, and it's what I had on hand because I am a commercial electrical contractor.

I don’t use the factory rails, but do use the gutter mounts.
Keep an an eye on Craigslist, letgo, OfferUp, and Facebook. Got my Yakima gutter mounts, and cross bars, for $50. I raced to the guy before he could sell them to someone else.
