Default Has anyone made some nice heavy duty recovery points on/through their stock bumpers?

This question comes up a lot, I know - but from a lot of threads I see, there are naysayers because they know the people asking the question are referring to cheap and easy bolt-ons.

What if my friend and I could weld/fab anything?

I'd like to see some pics/ideas of getting some nice sturdy recovery points built through the stock bumpers (front and rear), welded on real nice, etc.

I could build real nice and crazy bumpers and all that, but honestly I would opt for the stock look if I could just get some nice hooks welded through the bumpers and make them look relatively stock, especially since I have the nicer looking (in my opinion) chrome bumpers:

I'm actually planning on doing something like this soon. I have the jcr bolt on frame plates. My plan is to weld on some stock to extend them out a few inches then weld d ring tabs onto those. I also want to weld in a 3' bar between the two sides to cross brace it behind the bumper. Should be simple and effective.

Dude these are exactly what I wanted to do (both links/pics) - frikkin perfect.

I think it looks so much better to be able to keep it stock looking. Throwing a winch plate on the stock bumper is just icing on the cake too.

This will be my next project soon, I'll post updates soon enough once I can start it in a month or so.

Correct. A front receiver costs about $120.

Why would anyone pull from ONE side of a unibody???????

Dumb.

$101 and free shipping..........cannot beat that.

Just buy a good winch/bumper combo with D-Rings and be done with it. I have saw to many of these homemade tow points that fail the first they are used because of poor design/welding/materials.

Would you bet someone's life on one of them, I would not but YMMV.

At that point I'll just be making my own. It will come out looking pretty good. My friend can weld literally anything.

He really wants to make another tube bumper like he did for our friend's Toyota pickup - https://imgur.com/a/TrQvX

To be fair though, if we fabbed something up, it wouldn't fail. Period. Through the stock bumper or not.

I think I'm going to fab up these:

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f73/hd...-xj-mj-161912/

Friend said it looks super easy. I really doubt those would fail, you'd snap a line or pull off the bumper the winch is pulling from before those things would fail.

I'd start with 6 of these - http://thorbros.com/4-link-parts/4-l...-flat-tab-long to make 3/4" on each side.

That's ~$40 + cost of D-rings. Sure beats a $240+ bumper, or the labor to make one myself, and like I said I really like the stock look anyway.

Pass on thorbros they take a month plus to send out anything they have ready in stock. And those are 4 link tabs tripling them up would still be a bad idea. These are a tiny bit more and way safer http://www.tmrcustoms.com/store/inde...oducts_id=1061 or longer ones http://www.ajsoffroadarmor.com/produ...roductid=17574

Just like Andrew pointed out and I already said what happens on these with inexperience "poor design/welding/materials used".

I weld and know others who do also but there are only 2 people in a 4 state area who I trust for proper roll cage construction and a half dozed for a tube frame setup......and I'm not one of them.

JMHO but you trying to keep the stock chrome bumper look for a winch/bumper combo may be an idea that gives you problems (safety and strength being big issues. To do that would call for metal tools most people or shops have to form a bumper, weld it all together with all the extra frame/steering box support brackets finish/clean everything and welds checked before hand, then send to a chrome shop to have it done.

Guess that's why I have never saw one done in chrome before plus would take really nice welds for the D-Ring tabs on the bumper.

Thanks for the tip on passing up thorbros - http://www.ajsoffroadarmor.com/produ...roductid=17574

That link seems good - same price really, and they're already 3/4" thick.

I came from the mini truck world, thorbros use to be called suicide doors. One of the main guys quit and kinda killed the company to nothing. It took a friend of mine a month to get a set of air bags from them. You did get me thinking and i have a idea,You could get this stubby bumper http://www.dirtboundoffroad.com/stub...erokee-xj.html and some how mount your stock bumper over it.Or you can get it for 149 diy that you weld up http://www.dirtboundoffroad.com/stub...e-xj-5615.html but keep in mind hes moving across the country so if you need it now we might need to think of a plan b.

These have been tempting me:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-2001-FRONT-REAR-JEEP-CHEROKEE-XJ-BUMPER-SET-/171242724367?hash=item27dedc9c0f&vxp=mtr
There's even a cash pickup price, and he doesn't live very far from me.

My friend said it's a damn good deal for what it is. If I find myself being too lazy to start building bumpers, I might just get these.
