I know you said it is coming from under the shifter, but noises travel sometimes...Originally Posted by Scherel

If its under hard acceleration only.. check and make sure your cooling fan isn't rubbing the shroud
I can rule out the fan and exhaust..it's definitely from under me shifter. Now I get a pop noise when I turn.. it's not a ball joint it sound like it's from where the pitman arm can it maybe a steering component? I hate this new jersey winter. It's never above 30 degrees and It won't be for a while so this sucks, so cold out to fix anything.

I had the same thing happen on my 98 XJ. Its on 3" and did a 1.25" T-Case drop to get rid of some slight vibrations at 50-60mph and am planning on doing another 2-3" here soon.
I ended up loosening the motor mount bolts to provide a little bit of give when dropping the T-Case. Seemed to take some stress off the mounts. Still had a slight "grind", but only under aggressive acceleration. I pulled the yoke and noticed the splines were dry so I coated the splines and yoke in anti-seize and dumped the rest of the bottle in the boot.
Haven't had the noise come back since. Hope it helps!
