Default Got a chrysler 8.25 today.

So today as I was on the 3rd day of getting my lift keep off a junkyarded jeep, I noticed the rear pumpkin was alot bigger then my 35c on my 89 cherokee. I looked it up, and sure enough it was a 8.25. I asked the owner how much for it, and he said $100. I said sold. Now I have a couple questions. This is from a 92 xj, so it is 27 spline right,(or should be). How do I check that? Also, from my research I need to be sure of the gear ratio. How do I check the gear ratio? and lastly, even though it is 27 spline, it is still leaps and bounds above the 35c correct?

Also, I got what I think is a 4.5'' RC lift kit, with the rear packs, front coils, and swaybar quick discos. Is there any way to tell the lift height from the coils or packs until I install it? The coils appear to be thicker, and have 11 coils instead of the 8 on my stock coils. And the packs in the back have 5 leaves, 1 of which still has some black powder coating on it. I know it was RC, because of the shocks.

Yes it's a 27 spline unless someone upgraded it later and that's better than a D35.

Spline count: Pull an axle shaft and count the number of splines.

Gear Ratio: Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear to come up with their ratio. For example, 41/10 gives you a 4.10:1 gear ratio

As for the lift, no idea how to tell with it off the vehicle unless you can find a serial number.

Gear ratio: count how many times the pinion spins for one rotation of the tire or where the tire mounts. Example one revolution of a tire the pinion spins 3.5 times it is 3.55 gearing

Or you could just get the vin off the jeep you are getting the parts from, call your local dealer and they can tell you what ratio the axle is. Assuming it is the one that came with the jeep in the first place.

Larger tubes that don't flex like a d35.

The vast majority of D35 axle failures start with a tube flexing at the housing.

I'd run a 27 spline 8.25 over a D35 any day.

Can you upgrade a 27 spline to a 29 spline like the later years?

Yes, but you have to replace the shafts, and diff/locker, a few write ups out there with more detail.

I just swapped out my '01 d35 for a '01 8.25 yesterday. Only problem i really had is the driveshaft is bout an inch too long now, as the 8.25 pinion yoke is an inch longer from what i understand. Take that in tomorrow to get shortened at a cost of $57. Hope the seals and bearings hold up as i didnt change them. Good luck, Oh not sure if this is correct, but i thought i read that you will need to reuse your e-brake cables from your 35 in place of your new 8.25 ones since it is pre 96?

if the jeep you got the rear axle out of is a 4.0 with an auto it will most likely match your current ratio of 3.55
or you can check the tags on the diff cover bolts just have to scrape the grease off.
