Default Getting rid of the Oil filter Adapter

2000 Cherokee, I-6, AW4

I saw a post on converting the engine to run a oil filter with out the Adapter, since I had a engine on a stand (swapping for my blown engine) I decided this was the perfect time to do it.

First thing you want to do is take off the Oil filter adapter. There are many ways to do this, you just have to see what works best for you. The bolt on my adapter did at one time have a T-60 torx hole in it, but some where during it's history somebodt rounded the hole out and a wrench would not hold. But since the engine was in the open....Monkey wrench and a cheater bar did the trick with no problem. Here is what I had after a quick 10 min of work,

The filter was a bit stubborn, but a Hammer and phillips screwdriver took care of that;

Here is what the engine looks like after the removale

Now you can see the roll pin that must come out and you need to take the male on male adapter out of what you just took off;

The male on male adapter has a 1" nut on it, also I took the roll pin out with vise grips and a scewdriver as a pry bar. Heres is what you have left on the engine;

Then put the male on male adapter in the engine;

Tighten it down then install the oil filter;

And that's it, pretty simple ( even more when the engine is out). If anyone has any questions just post them and I'll try my best to answer them.

I think that you might have a hard time getting the filter off; I dont think there is enough room to be able to pull it directly out to the side. That is why there is the adapator is there.

I might be wrong there though.

What are the benefits to doing this? or just personal preference?

The filter is a little shorter in hieght than a normal cherokee filter. It's mainly personal preference; I didn't want to deal with the adapter anymore.

a REMOTE filter kit would be your best bet. You really should have a decent size filter on a 4.0L
