The box depends on the sub you have. Subs have very specific box volume requirements. No one makes a good cubby sub box anymore since JL Audio stopped making theirs. The Subthump and Select Increments ones are generally junk.
Know the volume you need then find or, more likely, MAKE the box.

There was a member on here that was building the cubby ones for a while but stopped. I recently PM'd him, and fast forward a few weeks, I now have a box sitting 5 feet away from me. Building one realistically is not that hard though, it just didn't make sense for me since I'm living in a hotel right now. Check this out if you're feeling ambitious

Despite XJ's~For~Life's assurances, his box did not have the 1 cu ft volume necessary for my sub, and I wasn't willing to cut-up a 2-door's cubby panel in order to use it. If I ever wanted to go back, finding a new panel would have been a chore. The box is approx. 0.4 cu ft.
XJ's~For~Life over at CherokeeForum drags his butt in shipping anything out like you wouldn't believe (I've discovered he has a history of not shipping anything and instead making excuse after excuse) and has a much higher regard for his product than it deserves. The box is solid and does the job great, but he overestimates its internal volume (I don't think he even knows its volume) and overcharges for the product. After repeated reminders for over a month, he still never did send me the replacement trim pieces and instructions he promised me; oh well, the trim isn't really damaged very badly. Bottom line: he's a ******-nozzle, and my advise is to stay away from him and to keep everyone you know away from him.

A 12" is excessive for the XJ. 10" is more than adequate. 8" is ideal and fits under the front seat.
Ported enclosures are larger than sealed because they require more air volume.
I prefer powered subwoofers, no separate amplifier.

Those cubby boxes are slick. I've been running a 12" sub in a ported box for a few years now. The ported box sounds great at certain frequencies but doesn't have as much of a punch at others. Also the box is huge. Takes up way to much room. Eventually I'd like to get a sealed box. Maybe built a custom cubby one.

That guy is a dunce. I stressed the importance of having 1 cubic foot for my sub to him when I tried ordering from him, but....
Instead, I'm having a custom fiberglass enclosure made by a local shop that will have the 1 cu ft of volume I need, will look better, and will cost less than XJ's~For~Life charges for his.

Ok, so I measured the box interior volume and it's .42 cu. ft, so not even close to what was promised/planned upon. I wouldn't buy from this guy, and it's a good thing I planned ahead when I purchased my box using Paypal goods and services. I waited over three weeks for this thing and now I'm pissed.

Filled one of my boxes with water inside plastic of course to keep the box from getting wet. Topped it off to the bottom of the outside face plate. Dumped that into a box to measure off of and got 0.56 cuft. Also done the test with deer corn and got 0.55.
That is the internal volume of the standard box. More air can be achieved by making the box deeper.
It filled a 16.5"x12.5" box 4.75" deep with water. That's 979.68 square inches which comes to 0.566 cuft.
