Gear swap?
Reading the required for a dana gear swap, they say a case change is required if going from 3.55 to 4.56? Are they talking about the carrier or the housing? The housing makes no sense to me, I know some 3 series carriers will not take a4 series gear. Can someone clear this up for me?
Thanks 1HB

Housing-
Carrier-
Yes you will need a new carrier, since I'm assuming that you're talking about the 30.
Dana 30 carrier breaks are 3.54 and down and 3.73 and up
Chrysler 8.25 does have a carrier break, but it's in the 2s, so not an issue for us.
Dana 44 carrier break is 3.73 and down and 3.92 and up

.....x 3.....you must gear both axles..... You will hear this again and again..... not the best idea to run 35s on a 35. BUT I'll tell you that many people have...with success...depending on how they wheel. I'm on my 3rd build now and am not taking the chance. Do a 44 or 8.8 swap. If you go with refurbished ones that are bolt in....it'll run you a good penny. So go JY hunting. If you're on a strict budget.....even finding a mid 96-99 29 spline 8.25 would be better.
Try searching on here and NAXJA....even JF. There's tons and tons of great info about axles and tire sizing.

and every body discredits the 8.25, It's really a strong axle. the axle tubes are larger diameter and thickness than on the Dana 44, and the shafts are pretty robust, especially the 29 spline. PLUS they're a direct bolt in and pretty easy to find. The ring and pinion are comparable to the 8.8 and with alloy shafts can be as strong or stronger than a D44....
