Default gear oil lucas or coastal?

Ive been using lucas 85-140 heavy duty gear oil and wondering if I could just use auto zone coastal brand. Is it much of a difference? Im installing a solid cover in the back and I have a Spartan in the front (the lucas really quiten down the Spartan) . Should I stick with lucas?
Thanks Heath

It's not that much more to buy a better product. The diffs are not something I would cheap out on.

i wouldnt go cheap unless you change it often, like twice a year. i buy lucas & leave it in for years , as long as i know no water has got in. ive had amsoil synthetic in my 1 ton van rear diff for 10 years, it still looks new.

If it's got an API stamp it's all you need.
Please don't fall into the snake-oil trap....be smarter.

its all you need if you want the minimum protection level cheap oil meets, some people just want better protection. if you are equating coastal oil to a synthetic oil you need to do some research.

Research doesn't matter to those who dismiss science and modern advancement as Snake-oil... They will only find research that "supports" their claim and dismiss the overwhelming science to the contrary.

I personally started using Amsoil when I was rebuilding our 2-stroke dirt bikes every racing season. After seeing the difference in wear and cleanliness between standard mineral oil and a good synthetic, I will never go back to a regular oil. I will also enjoy the distance gained between changes.

If you're looking to squeeze every fraction of horsepower and torque from your motor/drivetrain (aka - Racing application), then by all means go for it.

For the average wheeler/weekend trail driver the fancy oils are SNAKE-OIL, nothing more.
Anyone that does even semi-regular maintenance on their rig is going to be performing oil changes on a regular basis and the R.O.I simply isn't there. You'll get the same benefit by adding a sticker to your rig.

2-Stroke vs. 4 Stroke = Apples vs. Oranges
Were taking about high mileage XJ's here fellas. These are not 1 owner granny wagons with all of repair invoices in the glovebox.

While each and everyone of you is free to use whatever you see fit, it's fools errand to think that any high-end lubricant is going to make a big enough difference to make it a worth-while investment.

For those that do not know what API Standards are....

For the OP,
The only way to "quiet-down" the locker is to run thicker gear oil.

If all you have is a "Mall Crawler" use the expensive stuff as its never off road. If in turn you really do off road your XJ std. gear lube and change often I do at least every 3 mo. and sooner if in water/mud/deep snow lube is cheap.

I only run the good stuff in my race cars, same for motor oil and change after race along with filters.
