Exclamation Gear install question

So I'm in the middle of my gear install and I have an issue. I can't find the pinion depth variance marking on the new Nitro pinion or the factory 8.25 pinion. How do I know how to adjust the pinion shim size?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of pinions don't have it marked on it, I have not set up any in a 8.25, but this is when set up bearings come in real handy, I usually will start with the same shim stack that came out, and adjust from there.

That's my next issue. I destroyed the original bearing removing it. I only have the new bearing that came in my kit.

Short of buying some bearings to use, you are going to be at just taking a stab in the dark, because if you are to deep or shallow, you will probably destroy this bearing also.

Start with the original shims. Nitro gears should be very close. I almost never have to adjust depth.

I did as you suggested and it worked fine. My pattern is a little toward the outside on the coast side but nice and centered on the drive side.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I used a Yukon clam shell bearing puller. Thing worked awesome, saved bearings and shims.

I have a Mac Tools one, and it is still hit or miss when you pull bearings, I was able to save the pinion bearings on the 14 bolt I am building for my XJuggy right now. I have also trashed some pulling them.

This is the best. I use the same one. I have yet to damage a bearing and I have pulled probably hundreds.

I'm in the same boat. I blew $180 on a Mac 2 piece combo clamshell puller kit and it trashed half of the bearings I pulled with it. I turn wrenches for a living but never have rebuilt a differential so when looking at the tools, I had and idea of what I needed, but had no way to tell for sure what would work.

I got it done, I guess that's all that I care about. It was just a long day. Hahaha

I don't know if I'm a "gear guy" yet, but I could probably give you some pointers. Oh, and I have a pinion setup bearing for a 8.25 differential if anyone needs to borrow one.

I've got a set too. Finding pinion depth in that axle wasn't easy compared to the 8.8 I helped with. And I messed up two crush sleeve :/ love the BL adjusters though!

I probably will wait to regear till I have 35s. Did you get those lokkas in?
