Default Gas tank mounting in "trunk"

Thought as on mounting a regular tank in the back of an xj? My two main concerns are venting and what to do with the filler neck, I recently punctured mine and plan on stretching it eventually so instead of getting a skid that I'll be removing any way I'm gonna mount it inside, well patching old tank for while I workout how to mount the new one inside

I have mine inside my Jeep. I used an MJ tank though, because I had a brand new one already. I cut a hole in the floor and dropped the tank in the hole so the seam around the tank is on the floor. Then put the tank straps over it to hold it down. And I knocked out one of the drain plugs right in front of the tank and ran the electrical connector, fuel lines, and vent lines through there to where they all hooked up originally. I currently have to open my hatch to fill it up with gas though, but I'm going to run my fill line up to the panel right behind the driver side rear window, and weld the original fuel door shut, just haven't had time to do that yet.
It works great though, the bottom of the tank is still higher than the bottom of the rear bumper, and I don't hit it on anything anymore.

Mines a 4 door so I don't Have any space behind the driver door to mount it, might see if I can squeeze it between rear window and hatch or just open the hatch all the time, wonder if JCR could make corner guards without the fuel cap cutout...

I'm not talking about right behind where your door is, I'm talking about that little panel behind the window that is behind your door, right in front of the hatch. My tank is mounted about where it was originally, just inside the hatch. I've even got room to put my backseat back in if I wanted too.

It vents fine, can't smell any gas inside the Jeep. The two vents on the top of the tank are run through a hole in the floor in front of the tank, back to the original location.
The filler is on the back of the tank, since its an MJ tank. Cant miss it in the first pic I posted.

Yeah, I just open the hatch to fill it up for now. Havent had time to finish it yet.
As for the plastic tank, I don't know how I would mount that if it doesn't have that lip on it. I drove around for a few days with mine sitting on top of the floor in the back, before I mounted it like I have it now, and I didn't feel like it was secure enough. With how mine is mounted now, it can't go anywhere.
If mine had a plastic tank originally, I probably would have bought a steel tank and mounted it like I did. Older XJs and all MJs had a steel tank. I don't know if your sending unit would fit in the steel tanks though, it may be different.

I got a spare tank gonna look at ways to strap it down, else get a skid and get a fuel cell down the road, If I was to run the stock tank id prob get it boxed in so I could mount my spare above it

i dont have any pics of it finished, but i did this a couple rigs ago.

ended up completely boxing it in and sealing it up from the cab. also ran the shocks in the boxed in area.

over time the angle iron "frame" cracked the sheet metal it was welded to, but it worked fine for the life of the rig.

It is simply resting inside a stock xj gas tank skid which sat nicely between the frame rails.
