Default Fuel Pump Wiring

I am posting this in the modified forum because I am trying to install the GenRight 30 gallon fuel tank in a 1992 Jeep Cherokee. This fuel tank requires a 1997+ fuel sending unit. I am trying to figure out how to install the 1997+ fuel sending unit into a 1992 Jeep XJ.

Here is the vehicle side of the fuel sending unit wiring harness in my 1992 Jeep XJ.

Wire A: Black
Wire B: Blue
Wire C: Green with red/brown stripe

Here is my new 1997+ fuel pump. It looks like the fuel pump has a red and black wire and the fuel gauge has a green and black wire. However, the plug has 2 black wires a red wire and an orange wire.

My question is two fold. What does each wire do? How do I connect the new 4 wire fuel sending unit to my existing 3 wire plug? Which wire connect to which? Thanks for the help.

Default Any info??

Hello,
sorry to reply to such and old thread! However I’m installing the same tank in my 92 XJ sport. I’m running into the same issues as you and was wandering if you ever got the tank installed and everything working properly? My main issue is the return line, the newer style pump only comes with supply no return, what did guy do with your return?

thank you I’m advance for any info you could share!!

Orange - GreenBrown should be positive
Purple - Blue should be the sending unit for fuel gauge
Black - Black should be ground
I can't find the actual diagram. This is just a semi-educated guess. You may have to check the wiring, or do a bit more research.

Looks like you have an aftermarket fuel pump. Either way the 4 colors are irrelevant.
This is the pinout for a 97

You will have to do a bit more research to figure out how to connect it up.
My best guess is black to pin 6, blue to pin 3, and green/red/brown to pin1.
I'm not really sure about the return. It looks like it ultimately goes to ground.

Call me silly, but can't you just look at each pump side by side to figure out what wire does what?
I mean if you are not sure of what your doing with anything that has electricity, and gasoline, maybe you should not work on this?
This is kinda dangerous.

Yes, but that doesn't explain the 4th wire. It's a fuel return sensor that is likely not used on earlier models.
This is only dangerous if you try to run it without testing, or if you attach the wires without using a moisture resistant connector.

They are old cars. You can pull up diagrams and figure it out, take it so someone who will do the exact same thing for $120+ an hour, or take it to someone who will tell you it doesn't work because they're too lazy to figure it out.
