Default frozen steering-literally

My pump is brand new, new lines, rebuilt durango steering gearbox. Last few days when its been really cold I have to rock the steering pretty hard on a cold start up to get any pressure. Fluid is full and bled. Its also extremely hard to steer when its below freezing. (I think this is just frozen TREs since the boots are torn and they probably get water in them)

I'm mostly concerned about the lack of power steering on a start up because my old pump/box did that when it was empty, but everything has been replaced in the past month.

I've had bad luck with PS in the past.

Did you buy the steering box remaned or was it on a Durango?

What fluid are you using?

It only does it when it's cold?

Pump from NAPA, box from a durango and rebuilt. Running Valvoline fluid like I always have. Only does it when its below freezing at start up

Well, technically... you're supposed to let your **** warm up before you drive it anyways...

I'm not sure. I've never experienced that. The oil is just too thick to want to work when cold... maybe. Idk.

I always let it warm up, but last night even after warming up for 20 minutes it was way tighter than normal. Just doesn't seem right. Would it be safe to run straight ATF in a stock pump?

We used valvoline for a while on our power steering system flushes and I never saw this issue. When its that cold you basically have to let your truck warm up because your oils are all like syrup. Make sure you put the correct type of fluid in because valvoline makes different power steering fluids for different vehicles. ATF fluid is not a terrible idea but that is usually recommended for a top off fluid, not necessarily for filling completely. Also check to see if you're line are correctly installed.

Yes. The weight becomes thicker at colder tempatures, thus harder to turn. I don't have that problem, I don't have power steering. Lol
