Front xj ds or rear zj ds?
well im halfway through my rc long arm lift install and im pretty worried about the bad vibes ive read about. ive done some research and i was thinking about using a front xj ds or rear zj ds rather than buying a new ds. im concerned about the xj ds being too long for a 4.5 lift? i was going to pick up a AA sye, so can anyone guide me in the right direction?

With the AA SYE you'll need a custom length drive shaft in the rear. The ZJ front shaft is commonly used with hack and taps because it's about an inch longer than the XJ (V8 model ZJs not the ones with a 4L). The ZJ rear shaft is just like your stock one just a little bit longer because ZJs have a longer wheelbase.

Whether it's off of an XJ or a ZJ, you'd be using the front drive shaft. The ZJ front drive shaft is a bit longer, but I'm running a 4" lift and a shorty hack 'n tap SYE and I'm using an XJ front drive shaft. See the picture below.

If your talking about the rear the front shaft works on the rear with a hack and tap. If it's stock you'll need a stock style shaft and if you use the AA SYE you mentioned you'll need a custom length shaft.

i have 5 1/2" lift, aa sye, xj front shaft in the rear, but i got an auto with a 8.25 rear end works fine.
i've got 2 other xj auto front shafts for spares + the one in going to the front axle and they all fit, and i have tried them all to make sure.
not too short not too long...just right.

just to add, I have a teraflex SYE and a stock XJ auto front shaft as my rear shaft, works just fine, even with a 1" stretch in the rear.

The 2wd shafts are much longer than the 4wd ones so unless you plan on stretching the wheelbase it'll be too long. Nothing wrong with a hack and tap, been running mine for years but I have a custom shaft not a front one swapped in.

I got a XJ front shaft and then had it rebuilt at a driveshaft shop to the length I needed and got new u-joints installed while I was at it. only cost about $80 total
