how does the fluid look on the dipstick? sould very well be the front seal, and its not a chrysler tranny.
as long as it diddnt spin the bushing on the converter or in the pump it should be fine.

Napa has the seal for about $7. The problem is it may not just need a seal. Sometimes that's all. Other times it's either a worn out pump bushing, or the torque converter has a groove worn in it that'll eat any new seal you put on. I'm in the same boat. It started as a small leak, but after about 300 miles it's a very big leak. The puddle after I shut it off is about as wide as a roll of toilet paper. Hopefully I'll have it apart soon

I'd get the stuff checked or swap in another transmission.Sucks changing a seal and it blowing right back out alot of work for nothing.

Again back in the day and I can't see why its changed from the exploded view of the AW4.
The front of the trans where the inspection cover is basically is covering the converter/bell housing/ front pump of the transmission. Where the converter slips onto the splines of the trans front shaft there is a seal. That is the front pump. Around the outer edge is the front pump O-Ring. Usually if it is trans fluid ( you can drop the cover and stick ur finger inside or use a flashlight and mirror) if there is fluid inside the bell housing that matches what ur drippin your front pump is leaking and its usually the outer o-ring and not the seal but both are replaced since to get there -The trans must come OUT, (unfortunately).

This is correct--when the unit is taken down- the converter is taken off and the front pump is removed-the hub of the converter is checked for wear and IF grooved or worn undersized must be replaced. The pump is taken apart and the old seal and bushing removed and replaced. The outer o-ring same. The pump is realigned -tightened- and put on dowels to be put back on the old trans for line-up. The inside and outside get a coat of oil and watched to make sure the outer o-ring didn't get bound on the way in.
Another black oil- high milage unit- you may want to look for another trans or a rebuilt one.
