Default front grill header panel removal 1988 xj

The later xj removal of the front grill is straight forward when it comes to the fender bolts. How do you get to the bolts/screws on the early xj's.....help

Remove the side marker lights and light bezel, there will be two bolts or screws that hold the sides of the panel to the fenders.

I've got an 87 that only has one bolt behind the side marker. Still haven't figured out how to get the header panel off.

Not sure if this the same on 88.

I believe my 91 has two nuts behind each marker light. And one screw down the bottom of the header panel in the very middle/bottom (would be hidden below the bottom of the grill). Also I believe some nuts under the hood along the width of the panel.

I wound up pulling the header panel away from the body enough to get a hacksaw blade in there and cut through whatever the item was. Through this weekend I'll see if I can't extract it to find out what it was and why my setup was different from everyone else's. Seems odd that I would have to remove the entire fender panel just to get that bolt/screw at the top, but I searched the backside of the header panel for a few hours and found no signs of a bolt head or nut. Those lower two bolts on each side were also free-spinning so I'm thinking maybe someone modified it at some point in the last 30ish years.
