Default Front end noise ?!?!?

So I was helping a fellow Fourm member out right now and I got stuck in some mud tires clogged up really no traction. And while in 4 lo I was reved to about 4k in 1st and then second and third as I pulled out of it and I had a sever knocking from the front drive line I know I need a hub but this sounded like a drive line or axle shaft ? My from slip of the drive line is got a wee but of up and down travel. Could that be it ? It happens occasionally while driving too ? I think maybe another noise ? I'm just asking because I don't want to junk something on the trail yet if its normally so be it ! Btw it's an 88 cherokee Laredo 2 door 5 speed 4.0 Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear

If i stab hard mine will clunk sometimes. But shouldnt! Lol. Check u joints closey especially the axle joints. My upper and lower ball joints do it when they get bad, really bad in 4wd when i get some wheel hop. If you know it needs a hub assembly its a good chance thats it though. And slight yolk play is pretty normal on high mileage rigs. But could alsomake the noise. Pump the slip full of grease and itll tighten it temporarily and try the throttle attack again is guess...

With it being an 88 most likely just play in front diff and tcase from being old/warn. Just grease everything up in the front that you can and try it again as mentioned.
My 87 when not in 4wd I can rotate my front shaft 1/4 inch before all play in axle and t case is taken up (yes I have new u joints). And in 4wd and neutral there is minimal play till tires start rolling.
