Default front axle upgrades

so i know common XJ rear axle upgrades like the 8.8, d40 and 60. but what are some front axle upgrades? i have the hpd30. was wondering if i should upgrade to a better axle or just lock it or put better gears. i mostly mud and trails.. and same goes with rear, is the 8.8 a really big difference in power from the 8.25? i don't rock crawl, should i upgrade axles, gears or lockers on stock axles???

not looking for a "right answer" just wondering what the majority of you guys would run or recommend for the type of wheeling that i do. any input is appreciated

Id say the hpd30 is worth building if you dont plan on tires bigger than 35s and locked. if sticking with 33s Id build the crap out of the 30. chromoly shafts gears lockers trussed. yup id run it considering i have the peice of yunk LP30 no i will not be putting much money into it.

I'm running 35s locked front and rear on the same axles you have and I've had no problems. If you're planning on running tires larger than 35s you may want to go with something else but you already have a 29 spline C/8.25 so it is pretty stout.

goddam! well i obviously need some lernin on axles, which are the weak points, what should be upgraded, what should be left alone, whats a full float axle, what are other kinds? i need to be schooled on this stuff. i want to learn as much as i possibly can, especially since I'm probably going to be into offloading and xjs for the rest of my life. if anyone wants to throw in there knowledge, any help is GREATLY appreciated...

I wanna get the chromoly shafts with the u joints. I like the idea of trail repairs even though changing a u joint on the trail would be a huge PIA. full circle c clips with the joints. gears depends on what size tire you run. no sense in getting different ring and pinions for stock tires neither is getting 4.10s for 31s. lockers its all depends on funds and what you want. Id love to run selectable front and rear. just because I daily drive mine. Some say lunch box lockers are good and then you see others that explode them. Id run one in the front only to much noise in the back for a daily and locker does unless its selectable. say you want gears and lockers youll want something to protect your investment like some diff guards or HD diff covers.

best advise lol....if ur guna roll on something like 44s or bigger. but honestly if ur doing mud, gears, locker, shafts, and maybe a truss would be enough for what you use it for

the main week point in the d30 is the u joints so thats the first thing i would upgrade along with gears if your goin to bigger tires. lockers if you got the money at the time but you can always get them later. full float and semi float axles describe the axle shaft design in the rear axle, semi float is like a D44 full float is like a 14b or d60 and can be removed without taking the tire offand makes it a lot easier to swap out. and the other design is C-clip found in d35s which is prbly the worst design out there

this one is an article from fourwheeler that gives a basic explanation of some of the plusses and minuses of different ways companys build axles
http://www.fourwheeler.com/techartic...y/viewall.html

damit i was going to post the axle builder page on 4wheelparts web site but they changed the website since the last time i was on so i cant find it... anyways its still easy to browse axle parts on here (on left side gives you area to put in your jeep info and catagorys are under that)
http://www.4wheelparts.com/Drivetrai...ls.aspx?t_c=12

i lucked out and found a hp d30 without CAD under my 91, my parts jeep has d44 tow package for the rear, so thats going in, and it has lower gears, 3.73 or 3.93 i think hvnt cracked it yet, in the short term im getting a spartan for the front and nothing else other than the gears to run 33"s, in the long term im thinking of trussing it going up to 30 splines, and knuckles that will alow for highsteering, basic, simple, and i plan to go up to 35"s in the longterm

alot of people ***** about the d30 but plenty of people here and on other forums have proven they can beat these pretty good,,, you should read some of the builds on this site to get an idea of different set ups out there and see what they do with them, there are people with stock gears, shafts and other factory stuff on 35"s doing just fine
