Ford 9in vs Dana 60
I'm going to look at a 79 f250 tomorrow. I plan on taking the front Dana 44 for my full width swap. I don't know if I should take the rear d60 or just find a 9. I'll be running locked with 35-37in tires. I've looked it up but can find good reasons it's 50/50 with everyone!

If you are going to run the 79 d44 as is .. it is 8 lug.. a 9" is only 5 lug from the factory.. sure you can make it 8 lug with some work. As for strength.. they both have similar strength, but the axle shafts are stronger on the d60 cause it is a full floater, but the ring gear on the 9" is stronger do to the pinion support bearing.
I would run the d60 just cause of the bolt pattern issues.

you wont have a problem with either gearset. i would run the 60 just for the ground clearance at the pinion. the 9" pinion hangs down real low and will make your yoke and shaft more prone to damage from rocks.

If your going to run a 44 why not get the five lug 44 and a 9", they will be cheap that way and have the same bolt pattern. Millions of 1/2 ton fords out there for parts.

Went to the junk yard last week and all the ford were ttb. I'm having a hard time finding a 1/2 ton that isn't cast wedges too.

The 3/4 ton ford has bigger brakes and dual piston calipers.. that is one reason why I would keep it 8 lug instead of going to 5 lug stuff. Also the 8 lug knuckle is a flat top knuckle and can be machined for high steer.
Also the rear 60 is stupid easy to convert to disc brakes. also pretty reasonable.
