engine swap

Hi.. i just dragged home a 2000 cherokee sport that has a trashed 4.0 started looking and i found a 4.0 out of a 97 tj .. my qeustion being is are there any diffrences between the two engines that would prevent this swap. the sport has coil packs on it...i dont know anything about the 4.0 out of the tj...other than the guy said it ran good no knocks, ticks and it didnt leak or use oil he said its also only got 100k on it too.. thanks

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

If you have the front accesories on the TJ block, then the belt driven fan is centrally located as opposed to being offset to the passenger side like it is on XJ's. Which is cool if you wanna drop the clutch fan for electric. it will give you an extra inch or so to work with. Good luck with the swap!

what if we stripped both blocks and transfered as much over from the xj also if we went with the single fan would it affect cooling at all

Yes, to my knowledge you can swap everything over.

There are 2 fans on an XJ. 1 is belt driven. It is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The second is located on the driver side, like duh, and comes on when the engine reaches about 218 degrees or when you turn on the AC. That is for an XJ

I believe a TJ runs 1 fan that is belt driven that is located in the center of the block.

If you try to run 1 fan on an normal XJ you will over heat. Not a question of if, but when.

If you want to run the accesory brackets from the TJ block you would need to install a second electric fan where the belt driven fan used to be.

I hope all of this makes sense. And I swear I am not trying to talk down to you, just wanna be clear.

i have a 99 grand cherokee and am using a 4.0 out of a 95 grand ... i had to change the intake and exhaust but everything else worked ... it may be different in an xj but in my grand it was fine ...
