Default Engine Swap

I just got an 1987 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with the 4.0L, Dana 35 Axles and NP 208 Transfer case. Tomorrow I take delivery of a 1991 Ford 302 v8 w/ Fuel Injection, Computer, Wiring harness, and C4 transmission that I want to swap into it. I have never done this swap before and I am looking for any advice/information that might help me with this swap. I have a full shop and plan on fabricating any mounts or such that I can.

Your front axle is a D30 and the rear D35 is garbage. May not handle the 302.

Default Ok

Is there a way to beef up the D35 so it will handle the 302 or what axle should I replace it with?

Thats a pretty basic question for Cherokee owners. It gets asked alot.

I hate to say it, but if your gonna dive in this deep it may be better to look around the forum for awhile to get to know things about the Jeep. Learn as much as possible, the more you know the better you'll be.

But, to answer the question, XJs in early years came with a D44, but they are usually real hard to find, and cost $300 roughly. Later XJs had Chrysler 8.25 rears, but late late 8.25s had 29 spline shafts, which would be what you'd really want. Both the 8.25 and D44 are direct bolt in, but drive shaft length will be of concern, esp with the 302 swap.
