electric fan mod using headlight timer
 

I'm going to do the electric fan override switch. I've found the write up on it, but I read somewhere that there is a way to wire the fan so that when you turn the XJ off the e-fan will continue to run using the same timer/relay that the headlight uses. This way it will run for a minute or so and then turn off. Has anyone seen a write up on this? thanks

Ive seen it and know what youre talking about,,have you check the DIY'ers section?

Id kind of like to do that, my xj always runs slightly hot on start up for a minute soon after shutting down on warmer days.

Me too! Now this is a mod I'd like to do.

I found a write up on another forum, and this is what the guy used. There is a write up in the DIY section on the e-fan switch, but not with the timer. It can't be too much trouble to add the timer. I have a 2000 XJ and it gets heat soak alot, even when the temps are in the '70's. That hotronics timer seems a little pricey when you compare to this timer board.

That's where I got the info from. ...I'll get to it within a few weeks. I have to replace my water pump first.

I ordered the timer through Jmac supply. It was about $37.00 with shipping. I'm hoping to get it before next weekend.

on a side note i replaced my water pump and thermostat, as well as flushed out the system. The original water pump looked fine, but I had a new one on hand so I put it in. My coolant looked like garbage also. Since then the heat soak has not happened, although I've only driven it 3 times and the temps are around 80. Before the water pump/thermostat/coolant change it would heat soak when the temps were as low as 50. I guess the engine was running hot even though the temperature gauge said 210.
I've really neglected the jeep over the last 6 or 7 years. It usually just sits in the parking lot at work for weeks at a time because I drive a company vehicle. I'll start it up and run it for a few minutes, that's it. I've averaged under 2k miles a year on it the last 7 years. I had to buy new tires last year because the old ones literally rotted apart sitting in the parking lot.

my timer shipped out today, so i should get it by the end of the week, and I also picked up a temperature gauge off ebay. I plan on putting the temperature gauge probe in the engine compartment to check the temperature with and without the fan on. I think it will work.

ok--just bumping the thread to give you an update. ...the timer board came in Friday. I am hoping to do this today or tomorrow. I have to get the relay and switch at rat shack, and I think I have everything else....
